Default Pro 5.0 springs are too weak

I just got a pro 5.0 shifter because I'm doing a T56 conversion, and the shifter doesn't center itself when its in neutral. Does anyone know how to fix this?

That might not be the shifter.....

If it is the shifter, see if one of the springs is broken.

And I love my Pro 5.0

I already experimented with that, the problem is its with both sides, not just one way.

Increasing the spring pressure on both springs should fix it. Does the shifter center itself ok when it's off the transmission? If so, it might be a problem with the tranny.

That's what I was thought it might be

:knock on wood: and hope it isn't. Shifter <$ Tranny work.

I put a washer under both sides and now it centers itself when its in the 5-6 gate, but still not in the 1-2 gate. When the shifter is off the car there is a little spot where there's barley any spring pressure. It moves a little towards the middle when its in the 1-2 gate, just not all the way. I can move the shift fork where the ball goes into fine with the shifter off it, it moves freely and everything. And the transmission is supposidly rebuilt...

And the tranny not having any fluid in it and the car not running won't have any effect on this will it?

I took my Pro 5.0 out of my car, it did the same exact thing you're describing. I moved up to the B&M ripper, which honestly is not much better, but IS better.

I wish someone made a shifter that actually had strong centering springs. I'm gonna rip mine apart someday and try to put bigger springs in.

My dad has the hurst in his WS6 with the short stick and that thing has springs that are like 10x stronger. I'm going to go to ace today after school and try to find some bigger springs. The 2-3 shift is done by the springs, without them it will just go into first.

On my Hurst Pro Billet, I just added some extra springs on each side that were smaller in diameter. Same basic concept as what the guys above are doing. Works real well.

I found a spring that is same diameter but has thicker coils and just cut it down to a little shorter than what the stock springs were and now it works perfect.

I had this same problem with my Pro 5.0. It is the springs that are weak. What I did was take it apart, take one spring with me to the local hardware store and buy two springs (one for each side) that would fit in the center of the original spring. I did have to cut a couple of coils of each center spring so they could be the same height as the original ones. Then I just dropped them in the center of the springs, one on each side, and put it back together. It's been doing really good centering itself for the past 6 months or so that I've done it. It is a little work, but it was worth it for me.

I just did the mod described in that link. Worked perfect for me. Mine does just like everyone else wished theirs would do. I love my Pro 5.0 except for the noise it produces under heavy and WOT.

Make a gasket out of some paper gasket material for the base of the shifter, and add some nuts on the bolts for the shifter stick (on the passenger's side) and your shifter will be quiet at WOT.

So you are saying to lift the whole shifter out of the plastic cup by 1/2-1mm? Does that help on the noise? What would the extra nuts be doing?

No, not the whole shifter, just the shifter stick. Basically, you tighten the bolts down that hold the shifter stick to the shifter, then put some nuts on the part of the bolts that stick out to the driver's side. You might have to buy longer bolts for them to stick out enough so you can tighten down the nuts to, but it does help with the rattling at WOT.

i took the stock SMALL rubber boot, not the number 6 boot, but the one that goes under it. and stretched it over the shift stop ring. i know it looks like it will NEVER FIT over but it will. i then cut holes in the boot so the threads on the **** stop bolts went thru.then i put a zip-tie under the stop ring bolts which held the boot to the stop ring. i now have the number 6 boot coming to the bottom of the stop ring, then the little boot covering it up with the stick coming out. cut down on alot of the noise FROM THE TRANSMISSON.

p.s. - the shifter doesnt make noise, it only tattle tells on the tranny.
