Tranny Problem?

Tranny Problem?
Here's the deal. I was coming home late last night and felt like opening it up a bit on a long straight away. Started out rolling at about 20 mph in 2nd. Ran it all the way up to about 120 in 5th. Hit the clutch and snap it into 6th to coast back down. This is where things go nuts. There is a grinding sound as I pull the **** into 6th and then nothing. The shifter is in the 6th gear position but there is no grab, the engine just revs up like its out of gear. I put it in 5th and there is a whining noise coming from the shifter area. 1st through 4th gears are fine and operate normal. Anyone have any ideas what the hell I've trashed. If it's the tranny heaven forbid is there a stronger replacement than the stocker. Anytime I break something on the car I like to upgrade. Thanks in advance guys.

Did you hit 5th hard?
if so you might have bent or broke the 5-6 shift fork.
one or all three keepers in the synchro assembly could have broken.
its really hard to tell exactly with out takin it apart.
all that is in the rear tail housing and can all be fixed with out a press.
