Default Master Or Slave?

I have a '01 Formula Ls1 M6 with a Spec 3 clutch and stock hydrolics.

I just noticed a problem the other day when i tryed to drive my car....started it, and warmed it up then was about to leave, and car wouldnt go in 1st gear...or any other..i was locked out of them....but after playing with the clutch for a minute it all of a sudden worked and i drove like 4 miles to my destination, then when trying to leave the place i drove to the same thing happened EXCEPT no matter how much i pumped the clutch and played with the gears, the only way to move the car was to start it in gear.
I checked the fluid and it was dirty/muddy looking, but full.
I got the car to the auto shop at my base and made sure the steel braided line going to the slave didnt loose its connection for some reason. And it didnt. I did however bleed the clutch and get new fluid put in it. But still, i wasnt able to get the car into any gears at all without starting it in gear.

Which is the problem the master or the slave? so i can fix it. and is it better to get stock replacements for this situation or aftermarket?
thanks
-Chris

You could try unhooking the hydraulic quick disconnect and pushing on the clutch pedal. It should be rock hard if the master is good. It could still be hard if it's bad though.

When the quick disconnect is apart the fluid can't go anywhere, and since brake fluid is incompressible you shouldn't be able to move the pedal. If the seals in the MC were bad and fluid was bypassing then you'd be able to move the pedal anyway. HartAttack, since your pedal feels the same that's probably not it.

If you do this, you had better be very careful because you can destroy the master cylinder by trying to compress the fluid.

True, but it doesn't take a lot of pressure to tell if it's good or not.

I dont know too much about clutches, but it sounds like the clutch is constantly "engaging", so maybe adjust the master if you have one, or you might have to add shims to the clutch assembly like the throw out bearing or something.

I thought that would be the case...Yeah the clutch was making noises... I have about 25,000 miles on the clutch with it being in three different cars getting beat on all the time...first one was a camed/ sprayed SS, then a heads/cam Z28, then my procharged Formula. Its taken a beating.
Thanks for narrowing it down...
Now...
any prefrences to were to order a new one from...looking for the best price.
Thanks Idickson

That sucks. Hey, anyone want to compare clutches? Like, Mcleod vs. Ram, spec, and centerforce. Any experiences with these clutches, good or bad, post up. I'm figuring out which clutch I should get. I had a 4l60e and just recently converted to 6 speed, and I'm about to put the trany in, I need a clutch. Thanks.

It's best to get a clutch disk without springs. Spec 4 I believe. Springs are the cause of a lot of clutch failures.
