Not sure on that one...any of the synthetics I've used said they are fully compatible with any type of Dex III oil...synthetic or conventional.

 

Yeh I was even thinking of trying 1 quart of syn and 3 of dexIII.

 

I have been using Toyota/Lexus Type T fluid. $10qt. Have used it for 3 years and no problems.

 

Is the Pennzoil Synchromesh the same as the GM stuff?

 

Its compatable I think my shifter might of got a little notchier cause the new fluid is thicker and not worn out.

 

how often is T-56 fluid supposed to be changed? Im running redline fluid by the way.

As far as anyone can tell, Pennzoil makes it for GM. The only thing that would indicate otherwise is that GM offers a few different variants, whereas Pennzoil only offers one.

If you look on the pennzoil bottle it says
* Meets GM Specification 9985648 and Chrylser Specification MS-9224
* Suitable for use in GM manual transaxles and transmissions requiring GM Part No. 12345349 or 12345577

 

Bringing this REALLY long thread back up to the top, I'll put a nice plug in for Torco's ATF (fully synthetic). Not cheap, but some very nice fluid. It shifts better cold and warm (part and WOT when warm) than the Mobil 1 it replaced. Overall, I'm impressed. I flogged on it HARD this morning, and it shifted flawlessly.

Just Googled "Torco", and ordered it straight from them. No hassles from them at all, and had it to me in about a week. Just be prepared for it to cost a pretty penny...it was certainly more than I paid for the Torco RGO for my rear end (non-synthetic though for the rear).

 

Did you ask if it was hygroscopic or not?? Does it seem better than the Specialty Formulations stuff?? I know your T56 was modded/rebuilt, I wonder how the Torco stuff would be in a stock '00 T56? I guess I'll call them.

 

Nope...I'm more of a "shoot first, ask questions last" kinda guy I'm assuming it is, but then again, I may be assuming too much. I haven't had the SF stuff in this transmission since break-in, so comparing it to that really wouldn't be doing it any justice. I'd be more than happy to give it another whirl for my next transmission refill though. It worked well in my old T-56, even though it was on its last legs.

Hmmmm...just got done talking to the Torco folks, and they didn't have a good, straight to the point answer. Their main point was that all oils absorb water to an extent, even if they claim to be non-hygroscopic. So I'm not too sure...I guess I don't know enough about oils to form my own opinion here. Thoughts? The Torco comes from Group IV/V base oils, so it has PAOs and some esters in it (and from my research, esters do absorb some water).

 

I'm getting ready to change my clutch...I plan on changing fluid while im there. Ive got four quarts of Pennzoil Synchromesh ready to go.

 

Yeah, that's why most will tell us to steer clear of the Redline D4, with it's "up to" ~50% ester base stocks. I'll have to grill Torco and try to find out just how much % ester bases they use. I just hope they don't give me the "propriatary, restricted info" answer that sooo many other "boutique oil" companies seem to give to contents questions. BTW; do you have any idea when SF will be back on line taking orders??

 

I've been using D4 for bout 4 years. Works great.
