Default so confused...

i'm having the usual problems...after beating on the clutch a little, the pedal is on the floor and i have to pump up the clutch before it will work. well the other night, i'm cruisin around and all the sudden, it gets hard to get into gear and then it starts grinding into gear. i think to myself, the pressure plate is toasted, so i take the car home and order a new clutch. well, i go out today, and decide to see if the car does the same thing ( haven't driven it in a week) and it works perfectly. no engagement on the floor or anything. i really have no idea why it messed up the other night (under easy driving conditions) and worked fine today when i was beating on it. any ideas?

Sounds like a master cylinder issue to me, either that or the slave/throwout bearing is shot as well.

What master are you running?

all stock. i ordered the spec stage 3. i'm hoping it'll be an improvement. the clutch has acted like this ever since i got the car. i'm gonna have a shop do the install for me, so i'll just have him check out the hydraulics and all that mess. i'll even have him to do the drill mod.

This is almost definitely a hydraulic issue. Losing pedal pressure and then gaining it back the next day....etc. I think with some wear and heat build up the slave will start to leak a little, pulling in some air. Enough air gets in to mess up the hydraulic pressure. After everything cools down, the clearances tighten back up and the air bubbles have worked their way up and out. You should at least replace the slave and do the drill mod with the new clutch. If it still acts up replace the MC also.

Sounds like air in the system.

When repalcing the clutch, DO the new slave/to bearing while you have the tranny out, the master will most likely need to be replaced, the stocker just doesn't have the fluid flowing capacity to work with the Specs and McLeod clutches. I have been told the new Z06 master works, but it's up to you, I would get that or the McLeod Master, it's a little more tricky and has had issues, but when it works it works. No need to skip on the hydraulics and then put the new clutch in to only **** it up when your old hydraulics fail.

The spacer just goes behind the slave/TO cylinder. It moves the slave closer to the clutch which helps increase the slave's travel. A word to the wise and be advised...REPLACE THE SLAVE WITH A NEW ONE WHILE THE TRANNY IS OUT. NO MATTER HOW/WHAT ANY MECHANIC MIGHT ADVISE OTHERWISE...you've been warned.

Just get the slave for now. Stock MC should work OK with the spacer. Never bought a NAPA unit. Only GM stuff from dealer. Check out FRDnemesis's post entitled "New Procedure to bleed...." should work well.
