Default problem with clutch engagement

i'm at a stop light with the clutch depressed for a perios, and upon releasing the clutch "catch" is much lower, really close to full travel when i'm expecting it to be much higher...

any ideas??

does the same thing if i'm working the clutch several times like parking or making a turn. the clutch starts engaging lower and lower on the travel...

Perhaps a failing master cylinder? It sounds like it is letting fluid escape around the master cylinder while the pedal is depressed. If you release the pedal and press it down again does the engagement point return to normal? If so, it sounds like a master cylinder.
