Default What would be the CAUSE of my T56 going south?

My tranny is taking a crap on me. 2nd gear does not work unless you're really rough with it. Just driving around town, it grinds and pops out of gear when you let out the clutch. 4th gear is getting that way as well. And sometimes it grinds when I put it in 1st from a dead stop. Any clue as to what gives on that? You put a few bolt-on's on a lightweight LS1, and all the sudden your tranny is dead? Any thoughts on what is wrong, what I should do, or what factors contributed to the problem? Thanks!

I read something about this a few days ago.

Before I go anything further remember, I am not a gear head, I just read alot and I will tell you what I heard.

"it is something to do with the gear synchro's, they are on thier way out the door, from what I have heard if you have them replaced, fixed or whatever it is your problem will go away"

"About the cause of it, I heard it is just plain hard driving and racing".

Learn how to shift???? Dude, have you had your head stuck up your A$$ for a while now, he holds the bolt-on record for us 6-speed guys, so I'd say he knows how to shift!

Dude, I hate to tell ya, but it's defenitely your synchros. Put everything possible you can back in your car, and take everything aftermarket you can off your car, and take it to the dealer, and expalin to him that your brand new, low mile Z28's tranny should be grinding and popping out of gear, and carrying on like this. I got my tranny rebuilt under warranty by bitching about it enough! It's worth a shot man, because your tranny is about to go!

Good luck man!

Oh, and as far as why did this happen, just think about how you drive it at the track and on the street! It was only a matter of time before it happened. The stock stuff doesn't last long when you're that hard on it!

The T56 is not indestructible

Get the car as close to stock as possible and run it through the dealer, just tell them you use the car to get groceries for the elderly or something.

Good luck!

The T-56 is a *****....mine went out with less than 10,000 miles on the car....shifter fork, etc, 3rd gear syncros....I can't get warranty on it because I had to much crap on the car...therefore I threw a th400 in it.....

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I seemed to have shifted fairly well on my 11.699 @ 119.04 on a 1.77 60' with my naturally-aspirated stock LS1 motor. Now, if by bad driving you mean hard on the tranny, that's fine. But don't mistake abusive driving for bad driving. Would you care to race?

I am going to tell you what my Dad told me. See that pedal on the far left, thats the clutch, you're supposed to use it to aid in shifting the gears! These transmissions are not racing friendly.

Grinding is caused by the syncros going and popping out of gear is bent shifting forks.

I think a lot of it has to do with Tremec building the T56 instead of Borg Warner doing it. I know they had a lot of problems when BW went out of the tranny buiness and shipped everything down to Mexico around '98 or so.

From all the testing that BW did when my dad worked for them they put a hell of a lot of power thru the T56's then. The tranny just isn't really going to take hard shifting at the strip. I think the clutch has a lot to do with it on LS1 cars.

I know I have seen quite a few 700+ hp Vipers still using T56's with out to many problems on road courses.

But as far as your question I would have to say that it is probably the syncro's as well. Call up D&D in Wixom MI...they do a great job on rebuilding them.

Rageman, do you powershift at the track?? This will cause your tranny to promptly take a **** on you.

Nah, I don't powershift, in the true definition of the word, but I speedshift so quickly, I'm sure it's nearly as hard on the clutch/tranny.

I have the same problem with my 3rd gear. I am thinking that I can take it in under warranty but I have a few questions. 1) what exactly would cause them not to cover this repair under warranty? My only real mod is a moser 12-bolt, I had to put it in there because I broke the 10 bolt with 4.10's. I would think that they would cover it but I am needing some feedback.

The main problem with the LS1 M6s is the clutch design. Get a reputable shop to do your rebuild and do the drillout mod. This will help with the longevity of your tranny. Especially on a tranny that is shifted quickly a lot. Its not horsepower that breaks parts, it's the clutch not releasing fully quick enough for the shift to take place.
