5th or 6th gear on highway??
#123
not reading the entire thread, but I recently made a 340 mile trip between houston and brownsville (border of mexico) ... trip down and trip back up yielded about the same mileage... trip down, filled the tank and took about 4 miles till I hit the highway... cruised at 80 in 6th turning about 1750-1800 rpm ... made two stops. Once for being pulled over, turned the engine off out of respect for the state patrol officer (who was driving a hemi charger cruiser oooooo ) ... then once again to stop for a meal then it was back to 80 cruising again, with a bit of 90-100mph (2100-2200rpm-ish) on a straight stretch of the highway. As soon as I pulled into town off the highway, my check gages light came on, telling me I had x amount of gas left. Drove it around the next few days till I felt I really needed to fill it up, being mostly around town driving, I eeked out about 375 miles out of my tank.
trip back, slightly different... I filled up and pulled the tops off, made one stop, just to pee... otherwise made the trip back up and the mileage was identical (which I found very ODD because I had the tops off on the trip up but not the trip down)...as soon as I pulled off the highway in houston, maybe a mile up the road on the way home, the check gages light was on.
So I'm not entirely sure what to think... everyone says "oh sure you can get great mileage that way" ... but I don't cruise at 65-70... haha... so I know my **** will be less...
but my average seemed like it was 25mpg tops, but I've seen people making claims of 28+ at higher speeds...
my car is bone ******* stock at 20650 miles on the clock... 01 SS M6 3.42's
could it be an air or fuel delivery problem or am I about average?

with my 6 speed i run 6th gear most of the time on the interstate i think at 75 im around 1800 RPM 5th gear is like 2400 RPM so i get the choice of either, reason RPM are so low is because i blew up my rear end that had 3.73's in it and bought a friends A4 rear end with 3.23's in it
its nice on the highway but man the car got a lot slower with them i lost about .4 tenths of a second going to that low of a gear with the M6 (the 3.23's absoletely kill me on the launch and 60ft but its nice from a 40+ roll now), i really need to get a new set of gears or a stronger rear end with better gears

if im doing 65+ ill put it in 6th...but under that, and it surges. and at 60mph in 6th gear accellerating at all the car resonates like hell b/c of the longtubes vibrating. it sux because my car is so damn loud lol oh well

I have 3.42s and I'll use sixth gear from 50mph and up. I live in Florida though, so I don't ever encounter hills. I have a scangauge that can display instantaneous mpg, and between 50-60mph in 6th I can eke out 30-35mpg easy with only 10% throttle. My best sustained cruising mpg was like 37mpg and that was at about 48mph. Makes me wonder why the hell people are driving 4 bangers when a 5.7L V8 can get such good mileage. Why aren't there more V8 hybrids? Thats the only time that our cars really suck the gas is when we accelerate, cruising is pretty damn fuel efficient.

you've got an lt-1... the torque comes in at much lower rpm than ls1's. so i wouldn't be asking ls1 guys where they shift at.
and that even goes along with what your owner's manual says...
nice avatar! can i have it???

I have a 99ss 6sp, bone stock. I drove from Pittsburg, CA to Springfield, MO and back last August.
Did 2,050 miles going east and averaged 24.7 MPG. Most of the trip was in inter state 80 at 70 to 80 MPH. Driving west I drove 2,046 miles and averaged 25.4 MPG, again at 70 to 80 MPH.
The best average was from Winneemucca, NV to Newcastel, CA, a distance of 264 miles I averaged 29.4 MPG.

Actually when I asked this question over a year ago I had a 99 LS1 T/A...so the question then was legit
