Drill Mode Needed?

If you install the "upgraded" hydraulics (I believe 2001 and up) is it still neccesary to do the drill mod?

its never "necessary" to do the drill mod. But yah it would be worth the extra effort!

Then what was the difference with the new master / slave?

I have a 2001, did the drill mod and it made a difference.

When I first got the car I noticed the clutch felt a little delayed. Sort of like a cold morning with the hydraulics. Someone at work mentioned the restrictor in the clutch slave line and advised against banging gears until it was drilled out. He showed me an article detailing the drill out procedure. I then searched around and found an internet article about the restriction for the LS1's T56. It is put there to reduce driveline shock and to help drivers to keep from stalling the car on take off. The problem is that the slave cylinder can't supply enough pressure on rapid shifts with the restriction and by the time a driver is powering into third the synchronization is enough out that the gear can get missed. This has resulted in some engine damage under full power. If you ever listen to an LS1 with a manual and hear a subtle tick tick tick as it idles it may be the result of a high rpm missed shift. Some people blame the missed shift not on the driver but on the hydraulics.

The mod is a pain to do but definitely worthwhile imho.
