question on switching from M6 to auto !

Default question on switching from M6 to auto !

Guys , Im getting ready to swap a guy from my M6 to his auto , he is doing more and more autocrossing and Im doing more and more drag racing , He is keeping his computer so I need to do somthing about mine , Should I just find a computer for a 99 automatic fbody ? how much should I pay ? What about me having 3.42 gears ? Any help would be great !

3.42 gears are fine with an A4.

You probably can get a PCM from valvegod for a good price. Check in the classified.

Thanks ragtop ! I guess a power programer could ajust my shift points , Does it help with the tourqe managment problem ?

Hey billy...

The only thing that will rid your car of TM is having it eliminated through custom programming.

But you never know....some people have very little problems with tm. You'll just need to atap it tp find out. Under ideal situations your timing will drop for only a fraction of a second then repond quickly. But some people, myself included, have had problems of hitting deep negative timing and then taking a second or so to rebound. When your just racing for 11-12 sweconds a 1 second sputter sucks.

Depends on the automatic tranny you are going to use. If a 4l60e, then you will need a new harness, not a new computer. You will need to reprogram the computer with an A4 program though.

Most folks converting to automatic go with a TH350 or TH400 to avoid using the computer to control the tranny. You can get a manual valve body and do the shifting yourself!

i'll take whatever parts you have left over, i am doing the A4-M6 swap

so what would happen if you didnt change the computer, could you delete the codes with LS1-edit?

Thanks Byron form the info ! I found out the 2000 model harness will work fine so all I need to do now is go for the swap ! My car is stock for now , lid , cutout and the free mods are it , But with the tranny Im swapping it comes with a sy3500 convertor , so in reality my track time should improve !

Reckless is right, you need a new harness. I did the M6-A4 swap about a year ago, and I just reflashed my computer with an A4's programming. I stayed with the 3.42 in my car (I have H/C also, so it was a great daily driver/track setup). If you don't have H/C and a higher redline, you're probably wasting your time doing gears higher than 3.42s (this is assuming that you're optimizing for the track, not the street--some people that just run on the street prefer the increased perception of tq with higher gears). You loose trap speed with higher gears though. Concerning tranny choice, I picked a fully built 4L60E. You have to weld a piece of metal into the transmission tunnel to accept the new shifter location, but other than that it is extremely straight forward. Get diagrams from a dealer for both the auto and the manual setups and compare/contrast. The TH400/350 would probably hold allot more power, but you sacrifice OD and don't get as deep of a first gear (2.75 is the deepest option on the TH400/350)--4L60E is 3.0 something. Even being the weaker of the two choices, my 4L60E has held up to high 11s passes with no issues. FLP, Hughes and a couple other shops make built 4L60E trannys. Not quite sure what the price comparisons are between the two, but I can say that the Hughes tranny comes with a 1 yr warrantee--plus, they're somewhat generous with that timeframe. They rebuilt my first version after wiring issues fried it <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> Attention to detail learned the hard way!
