Default How far can tail be lowered when removing trans?

How far can the T56 tailshaft be safely lowered, and what will break if lowered too far? I am removing my transmission. It is still attached to the engine. I have lowered the end less than two inches and I heard a faint cracking sound. I still have plenty of oil pan clearance at the crossmember. I can’t see interference anywhere.

I found it easier to pull the tranny from the bellhousing and then the bellhousing from the back of the block. Good luck.
