So I am at Cayuga raceway on friday, test and tune nite. My last race of the nite was my WS6 M6 against SRT NEON.
I stage ,launch and im starting to fly , 1st and 2nd gears are fine then went to shift into 3rd ,,, and GUESS what i Put it in REVERSE. Made a bad noise, lots of grinding. I hit the break and clutch fast as hell.
Now I know my car has reverse LOCKOUT, but why did it fail that 1 time ???
Guy I was racing told me he saw my tire bounce.
Today driving car i was trying to see if i could put care in reverse while driving down the road, and the lockout would not let me.
WHAT HAPPENED AND WHY???

Off the top of my head you can still go into reverse by producing more force than the lockout solenoid can hold back. Something around 80 ft lbs if I remember right. This was all in my FSM while I was rebuilding my T56.

Wow...thats crazy **** man, I've never heard of that happening. I thought the reverse lockout system on our transmissions was bulletproof.
Sounds to me like theres something either wrong with the shifter or the transmission reverse lockup mechanism, because that just shouldn't happen at all. I've heard of people missing 3rd from 2nd and going into 5th (especially with the Hurst shifter) but never reverse.
I'd get it checked out asap, because one more incident like that could destroy your entire drivetrain.

First off its a reverse inhibitor NOT a lckout. It can be overpowered. If you did, in fact, get reverse you are puting WAY too much muscle into your shifts. As was stated above, you could have crashed 3rd. If you have not done the drill mod it is highly possible that you crashed 3rd.

It was a good start at the beginning of the race, and I was probabily over anxious, but I know it did go into reverse by the way the car bounced and the way the rear end acted, and the grinding.
Calhoon, I agree with you, I may have over powered..........6'4" ....260lbs...
What is the Drill Mod ?
Also something I forgot to mention that right after I did this mishap the
ABS and TCS lights came on in the dash. I turned the car off in the pits and sat for a min, restarted car and lights were gone.
Thanks Warren

you can push past the lockout, but you need two hands pretty much and alot of force...
but with that being said...mine has messed up before by not letting me go into reverse sometimes, and sometimes going into 5th it feels like it will go too far over

Man, I dont see how you went from 2nd to reverse. Just seems like you have to WANT to go into reverse, would have to be deliberate.
I can see going 1-2-1.
Not trying to call BS on you, I believe you, but how?

I'm no tranny expert, but if you're going WOT in 2nd gear at XX mph and put it into reverse, shouldn't it lock the rear tires? I only ask because I had a friend who did something similar to an old ford truck with a C4 auto tranny. He was driving slow and put it in reverse and the wheels started to move in reverse. I think he blew the tranny by doing that.
So if you shifted to reverse instead of third, I would think you would have done some serious damage (instantly noticeable). If so, then I would have to agree with the guys that think you might have gone 1-2-1 instead of 1-2-R. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, because I am by no means an expert on transmissions.

Have you ever been in a car tha went 1-2-1 at WOT... it will do something real similar to what your describing... engine revs fast... sounds brutal to the motor. And the rear can bounce and you'll hear all kinds of grinding sounds... My guess is thats what happened... 1-2-R would just be insane

From HowStuffWorks.com:
"Reverse gear is handled by a small idler gear (purple). At all times, the blue reverse gear in this diagram is turning in a direction opposite to all of the other blue gears. Therefore, it would be impossible to throw the transmission into reverse while the car is moving forward -- the dog teeth would never engage. However, they will make a lot of noise! "
You probably went into 1st gear, that would make more sense.

Ya I guess it could have went back into first, buy the way it gringed and locked up maby I assumed it was reverse.
So I guess I overpowered the shifter back into first, I know first also has the so called lockout like reverse does.
anyway I dont seem to have any problems,...unless you count my driving habits
