I plan on refreshing my T56 soon.
What puller is required to remove the 5/6 driven gear? Is it necessary to use the factory-style puller?, and if so, where can I get my hands on one?

My tranny did not need a puller. Those gears came right off. The only gears that needed encouragement were the ones down low on the main shaft (1, 2, 1-2 slider). Other than that, everything slid off by hand. ~50k on the tranny.
http://para.noid.org/~lj/ has some T56 rebuild pictures and tips as well (left side, "T56 Rebuild"). For an LT1 car, but the only internal difference I saw was that the LS1 had the little rubber "donut thing" on the main shaft at the very tail end of it. Pay particular attention to Jeff's pictures of the shifter rail mechanism. I just now saw that, that would have saved me an hour when rebuilding mine. It slips apart when you pull the case off. And good luck on the shift rail bolts. I had to have a nut welded to one of mine to get the stupid thing out.
