Loose slave bolt?
This happens 89% when the motor is cold and I yes I did the install on the car. It happens when engaging the clutch in the morning when it's 90 or 45 degrees out. Typically happens on the 2 -3 shift if you don't slip the clutch that much. Primarily from dead stop to 1st. It goes away after it warms up. The only thing I can remember about her install was that one of her slave bolts would not go in all the way. The bolt hole was stripped bad. It is possible that the bolt backed out. You think this could be the cause? The car sounds like an elephant crossed with something out of Jurassic Park.
I have though about one of the slave bolts coming loose. The only thing is that the slave is sandwiched between the diaphram and the trans. If the bolts were to come loose, the slave would still disengage properly(I think). The only problem you would then have would be the slave 'slipping out' of place and riding on the input shaft, destroying your slave.

I'm not following you on the chalkboard/eraser thing, but think you might be describing clutch chatter?

for a while now i've had a similar sound. as i back out of the driveway i don't hear anyting. put it in gear fine and release the clutch and get a strange grinding/chattering sound. this is different from what the clutch chatter sounded like on break in.
it will make that sound for the first 1 or 2 times i pull out from a stop. DOESN'T do it when shifting to 2nd.
then it goes away...car has to sit a while before it does it again.
what's got me worried is that i'm not getting almost no clutch pedal...but i have to try bleeding it really well first...
Thanks for the feedback, but if you read the above the only thing I can remember about her install was that one of her slave bolts would not go in all the way. This was a feeling of the bolt hole being stripped or something. Starts threading in and then just keeps spinning. Hard to back the bolt out.

Answers your question right there as to why it chatters.
Never known someone who had a spec 3 that didnt chatter. Mine did for 25k miles till it pussed out.
I have a spec 3 with a little over 1K miles on it, works great, no chatter at all. 800.00?
jeez how'd you spend THAT much?

AND LET ME REITERATE HERE:
It's not a constant chatter at all. It's in the morning or if it cools for 4 to 6 hours. It happens only from dead stop to first. Might do it once or twice then done until it cools again. I definitely know that it's broken in correctly
Funny how it kinda happened to both clutches and I did the install and break in on both.
It's more so with hers, but I've heard mine do it a time or two as well.
