Default T56's are junk, please help.................

I have an 02 Z28 and I have had it go out 7 times so far. Everything from; synchros, shift forks, sliders, lockers, ect. If something in the t56 can be broken I have done it. I want to beef it up so this won't happen again.

I am currently running around without 3rd gear, and it is realy getting on my nerves. I still race; and sometimes I can powershift and force it into 3rd, but that is becoming more and more of a rarity. I think it is about time to tear it down.

Can someone give me some info on the T56's, possibly some pointers on the intenrals if they have any. I have the D&D transmission's rebuild manual, and I am thinking of attempting to rebuild it myself.

Also does anybody have any links or prices on the steel upgraded internals for the T56's? Like possibly the steel shift forks, brass synchros, or any other upgrades, such as the viper T56 parts.

I dont know that much about it, but I think the viper T-56 just has a bigger housing for a bigger clutch. IMHO the T-56 is a great tranny and you should try some different shifting.

make sure the clutch is working right. A lot of times it doesnt release fully and drags, wearing out the synchros.

go to www.ddperformance.com and ask them. you can get better syncros and steel shift forks.

other places are FLP, SMC performance but you have to CALL both of them.

Hey Slowhawk

How do you like the 220 cam? Does it make good torque from idle and up?

Im thinking about going with a custom single pattern comp cam xer grind with 220 duration and 581 lift and 113 degree centerline and about 3 degrees of advance ground in. Hoping it works good with stock 3.42 gears and still make good power up top.

THE T-56's FROM THE 2002's ARE JUNK!

My 02 went in at 3000 miles for a completely new 3rd gear, shift forks, synchros ect. It is starting to get shitty again. There are many other 02's that have experienced the same probelems.

its pathetic

Maybe somebody could help me out here, whenever i'm at the drag strip, or even on the road i'll hammer it in 1st, shift it to 2nd(wheels spin), and try to go to third it wont, the clutch will stick halfway down and I will have to pull it up with my foot to get it in, I have to coast to the finish line at the strip because of this(1/8). Any help would be great?

Sorry but it is not just my shifting style. I have had a mustang and two camaros, and know how to power shift. This is not an uncommon thing in the 01'and 02's. Mine first went out at 700 miles under normal break in, then again at 1500, they replaced the trani at my demand, and that one has gone out 5 times now( it was removed from a car on the showroom that was similarly packaged. I am thinking it has to do with the quality of the trani products produced by tremec.

I was doing some reading the other day on annother site and it looks like after the Borg/Tremac merger they changed the design after '00 (Tremac SUCKS ***). Looks like I was running my mouth about something I did not know about. I have a '99 and it seems like this thing will take all you want to give it. Sounds like the Tremac influence has made the T-56 about like the old mustang T-5. I have read about a bunch of T-56 problems in the '03 cobra as well .

Sorry I was not trying to be rude. I just had researched all the problems in the newer cars and knew a lil about what had been going on in these cars. I was not trying to say I was the worlds best shifter, but I know I can hold my own, and it was not just my technique.

I have a 00M6. It says both Tremec and Borg Warner on it. It is my understanding that it is tremec built to the Borg Warner specs. So far, knock on wood, I have had no problems. Oh, BTW, car has 53k, an honest 1000 passes at the track, and now is over 400 RWHP. I think a lot of it is the driver.I had no problems with my 97 M6 either.

This definitely sounds like a driver issue. I think power shifting is a good way to blow these trannys apart. Try speed shifting instead - I believe Nineball made a post awhile ago about the ET difference and tranny longevity between the two styles of shifting.

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH DRIVER.

This is a probelem with 02 model year cars only. Coincidence? NO. Something happened in the manufacturing of these T-56's. There was a post about the shaft allignment of the gears (in the housing) being off due to a machining f*ck up where the holes (for the shaft) were drilled slightly off.

Personally I think tremec got cheap and passed bad parts through their manufacturing system. It is physically harder to put the car into 3rd. Just yesterday mine got stuck in 4th, the motherf*cker would NOT come out, i had to pry it out with both hands. WTF is that?!

But dealers are MORONS so instead of giving probelem cars new transmissions they continue to rebuild them using new parts, when the parts will just get f*cked up again because the casing of the trans may be the probelem.

If it is poor manufacturing from misaligned maching, what do you do? There is no guaretee that a new trans will be any better and rebuilding the trans isnt going to help.

the manufacturing of T56s at Tremec began in '98. The trans has definitely gotten better with the carbon blocker rings and the availability of an iron 3/4 shift fork. This is the same box in the Viper - and it handles all 500ft-lb of it.All model year LS1 T56 are essentially the same there have been changes to the clutch and release system ,but this doesn't fully explain the synchro problems. The line about machining the gear/ shaft bore off is just dealer crap - how did he measure it? Shame on you for taking it in so easily.Do you let them balance your tires on thier head too?

You really need to upgrade you hydraulics bottom line. If you are using an aftermarket shifter, USE THE STOPS! Looking at the internal stops in these transmissions is a joke. It is so easy to overshift the tranny and break the blockers and tabs while shifting. I have had 4 rebuilds now and 2 replacements all covered by factory/aftermarket warranties. Everytime it was the same damm problem. 3rd gear synchro, getting stuck in 4th and crunching or popping out of gear. Added the Mcleod adjustable mc, drill mod, and finally used the shifter stops and no more problems.
