Z06 Clutch Parts, Drill Mod Questions!

Z06 Clutch Parts, Drill Mod Questions!
I have a 1999 SS and need a new clutch. It has close to stock power and I don't drag race it often.
I have been searching the forum all day and finally came up with the following parts list to upgrade to a Z06 set-up.
12570806 - 2002 Z06 (LS6) Clutch kit with Pressure Plate, Disc & Flywheel
12565145 - 2000-02 Fbody Slave Cylinder (Req. on '98-99 F-body with Z06 clutch)
Here are my unanswered questions:
-Why do I need a new slave cyl to begin with?
-Some people are upgrading their master cylinders. Is this necessary and why?
-Do I need to do the drill mod as a requirement, or is this just because it helps out in general?
-Everybody keeps getting air in their lines during the install. Any super tricks in bleeding?
I pulled the trans out myself using just the service manual and it was a big mistake. From now on I am doing research first.
Oh, and the reason my trans is out is to do the 1st / 2nd synchros. Is it worth using the D&D performance (Viper) upgrade kit?
Thanks,
Chris

Hey ghettochild,
Have you already put this setup in? If so did the slave cylinder fit and did it come with a throw-out bearing? I emailed gmpartsdirect.com but they can't give an answer with a part that didn't originally come with my 99SS. I already have an adjustable master with the drill mod done.
How do you like it? (if you've put it on...)

I have a 99 Z28.. So there's no need for a new master cylinder?
Do I need new bolts too? I haerd they were tq to yield.. If so, what are the part numbers for those too?

Excellent about the parts!
ynneK: If you upgrade your clutch then your going to need a new 02' slave and an aftermarket adjustable master with the drill mod done.(They come with intructions on how to do this.) If you don't then you won't be able to shift without grinding the gears from 4500rpm on up!
I am kinda curious about the bolts as well. This is only the second time I've heard that and yesterday was the first!

The slave comes with the throw out bearing. I have not, however, installed the uniit yet.
What is the difference between the 1999 master and the newer master? I have read that you do not have to change this part.
What does RPM have to do with the drill mod? Doesn't the drill mod just open the orifice size so that you can clutch/shift faster, regardless of engine speed?

Re: Z06 Clutch Parts, Drill Mod Questions!
I have seen it posted that you don't need to change the master, but with my 99 I went and had a Spec III clutch put in with the 02' slave unit. When I went to pick up the car the mechanic said lets take it for a spin. I did, with him in the car, and going into 3rd and 4th it would not shift into gear at WOT at the end of the rpm range.
The mechanic immediately said, "Damit, I new we should have put the adjustable master on it." So I did and problem solved. He was a cool guy and had worked on my car several times, so I don't think he was feeding me a line of ****. But I guess it is possible.

If I understand right, for an aftermarket clutch/pp setup, you need an adjustable master cylinder, so you can adjust where the clutch engages after you install it, and when it starts wearing down.. In the past people had to use shims to get things engaged right..
the stock clutch/pp setup supposidly autmatically adjusts itself as the material wears down..
So it sounds, for the stock clutch/pp, its a very good idea to get your slave replaced if you have an older slave, and a not a bad idea to get the master replaced with GM's latest too..

The 99 master will work and it will work fine without the drill mod.
Do not recommend anyone skip the drill mod while their car is apart. It is the primary reason for so many 98-up T56s losing synchros.

Re: Z06 Clutch Parts, Drill Mod Questions!
StevieZ: Did you replace the Z06 clutch after 8000 miles? If so, was it because your pushing 400rwhp or more. I ask because I am really wanting the Z06 set up on my car which is barely more than stock. I want it because I've gone through 3 different clutches all from spec (II and III) in 350, 700, and now 1500 miles. ALL have been factory defects. On the first one the center weld broke loose (caught it early) and the next two chunks of the pads just break off and float around in the housing (read about this happening to other people as well). I feel that the Z06 well suit me just fine. How did you like your Z06 setup when you wheren't pushing so much power?
