my name is joe and i understand what your going through. my 2002 ss had 758, yes 758 miles on it.not 7500 but 758 miles that were babied not beat on. I was still breaking in the motor.they had to rebuild the entire trans. It was the classic usual p.o.s. problem pops out of third can't get it out of fourth can't get it into fourt yatti, yatti, yatti!!!well the place i bought my newly ordered car from said there was no problem with it and blew it off and some f-in porter smashed my front end, but that is another story that will make me rip this computer out and hurl it through a window!!!m-f'er!!! <img border="0" alt="[shoot]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_guns.gif" />
now the dealer told me this when i was in the 500 mile range so i continued driving it till into the mid 700's when it became alot more often this was happening till i couldn't get it into 1st. So i took it into a different dealer were they were actually concerned and pissed at the first dealer because it cost chevrolet money$$!! Believe it or not they liked my mods. so now the car has 1800 miles on it and it's in storage waiting for season two to begin. no problems with trans--YET--!!!
hope this helps!

I've only been a member of this website for 2 days now, searching for info on these damn T56 problems, and it seems pretty evident to me that we are all having the same problem, and I'm sure that with enough of us gearheads working to find out how to cure it for good that day will be written in history lol. Anyway, yes I too like most T56 owners are having problems for the second time with mine, and yes I know exactly what it did when it did it, shifted from 3rd to 4th, slider hub keys came out and now there's no syncronization between those gears. But why do you ask was it able for that to happen, well FIND THAT OUT AND EVERYONE ON HERE WILL LOVE YOU. It's been said that it's because of the ball detent letting the shifter move too far in fourth, and it's been said that we need to use a shifter with stops on it to keep the slider from moving too far. BTW, mine is in my 96 TA, so this isn't just a 2000 - 2002 problem, it's a "T56" problem that I'm sure the vette guys and the viper guys are having also. It's just lucky for the newer cars that they have the warranty to cover their parts and labor.

I've never posted but I've been lurking around. I always thought my problem was me, but maybe its not. You guys tell me.
Sometimes when I put my car in to 3rd (02 SS) It grinds going in. I have repress te clutch and try it again and it still grinds. I have to let me foot of the clutch totally, let the stick sit in the "Netural" position for about a second or two and then slide it back in, and it goes.
I'm I screwing up somewhere or is this one of the T56 problems?

At 25K, 01 SS, blew the 3-4 detent keys out from under the slider, locked in 4th.
Rebuilt my self, w/ new steel fork, synchro kit from D&D, replaced ALL clutch hydraulics, added McLeod adj master, The thing FINALLY shifts effortlessly even at @ 7K and no more grinding 2nd, no more waiting to let it slip into 3rd.
Seems like if you rebuild it once your self with new parts it makes it work like butter compared to new and takes more pounding.
But if you blow a T56 up several times within 2K miles... im convinced its operator error.....

I clearly am not in you all's league, but it seems I have a similar problem. My 02 TransAm WS6 started popping out of 3rd gear around 32,000 miles. The dealer would do nothing becasue I could not get it to repeat. I now have 47,000 and it is additionally not going into reverse even though you can feel it slide into gear. The fact that I've had to replace all the headlamps, front turn signal assemblies, and front rotors on this car befor it high 40,000 is another story. I drive this car so easy that my 4 sons make fun of me. To have the tranny go bad at this mileage seems as if GM has a bad mfg problem.
Is this similar transmission type to what you all have had problems with?

Is this still a serious problem? Did GM ever issue a TSB? I'm about to purchase a 2002 Z28. I don't want to have to deal with all of these problems if I don't have to. What say ya'll???

Would any of you consider an extended warranty to take care of any t56 problems that may occurr? The 2002 Z28 that I am about to purchase has only 12,000 miles on it, but it is a 2002 and it is almost 2005 so I'm not sure how much warranty is left on it. There is no record showing that it has had any transmission problems in the past. Thanks for any advice in advance.

I just purchased an '02 SS 3 days ago and am already experiancing grinding trying to get into 3rd and 5th gear. 5th RARELY gets in. 3rd engages about 1/2 the time, but the car only has 20k miles. Is there anything I can do so I don't go through tons of money to keep fixing it??? I would like some help before it gets too bad for repair.

Got my car stuck in 4th gear @ 25k miles and got the tranny rebuilt.... Blew up a centerforce clutch in 3 weeks.... Spec stage 3 works awsome for me....
Although my 5th gear grinds 95% of the time....

my 02 broke the slider keys for the 3-4 shift. It first locked in gear. When the slider keys break they cause a chain reaction in broken parts for your tranny. If GM installed billet slider keys in T56 they would cut there tranny problems in half or even more than that. My tranny failed with less than 1,500 miles on it.

98 SS with 35k miles, grinds occasionally going into 3rd, especially at low rpm's. Go figure. It happened the first time to my wife, with me in the car. You can believe the sh*t I gave her, then when it happened to me, all hell broke loose! lol Anyway, looking for a decent shop anywhere from about Lansing to Chicago to Indy (I am in northern Indiana). Saw a post a while back about a decent shop in central Indiana for a rebuild? Can't find it now. A little help? BTW, clutch is bad too, and I think the previous owners (2) drove like little old ladies. I don't really beat it, but it sure is fun to swing the *** end out once in a while!

The fact of the matter is that the t56 is a piece of ****. I'm on my 3rd T/A and all three cars have had the trannies rebult for one reason or another my 02 trannie at about 10000 mi got stuck in 4th and took out 1-4 syncros and the dealer put the car back together wrong and then in took out synch 1-6. Now i had a problem with the clutch bening the forks and the car would not engage the clutch....... back to the dealer

Well, at 12,000 miles and 3.5 years of owning my new ordered 01 SS, the tranny was starting to pop out of third and stuck in fourth twice. Dealer could not find anything wrong other than the popping out of third, but basically said it may or may not be covered under warranty. So to make a long story short, I took the car to Road Atalanta and that did the tranny in. Lost 3rd and 4th was a stickler.
Had Rockland Standard Gear rebuild the tranny with the right parts and proper tollerances. Cost $1,2xx.00. Also installes a new clutch at the same time....Exedy Hyper Single. Cost $12 or 13 hundred. Total new tranny and clutch ran me around $2,600 big ones, but the tranny is 2nd to none, and the clutch has held up to my abuse so far. We'll see when the slicks go on.
