Default Thoughts on Pro 5.0

I'm looking for a Pro 5.0 shifter for my z28...what are the thoughts on it? Good? Bad? I have the stock Hurst and I hate it!

I had a stock Jurst and hated it. I replaced mine with a B&M Ripper with a hurst shift **** (with a jam nut so it is not loose on hot days). I have driven the pro 5.0 and the ripper and I find the ripper to be smoother and it looks to be built a little better. I don't like the use of standard hardware bolts for the shift stops on the Pro 5.0 (they run bolts from the inside out and use the bolt heads for shift stops), they seem to work, it just looks like something that could have been done better (like the B&M design). B&M uses a solid ring or collar around the shifter and has hardened stops (allen head and a jam nut with a machined face, not a bolt head). THe Pro 5.0 I used ans worked on was a couple years old....they may have changed the design my now. But I felt that for the same price, I'd buy the B&M...(though any of them beat the stock Hurst). Just my thoughts....Good luck!

I had one when I had my 6-speed, it was a good shifter, I kept it stock length, didn't really like the feel of a shorter shifter...

Before you decide to blow $150 on a new shifter, try a short stick. It made a WORLD of difference on my factory Hurst. I also tried the 5.0 (with a cut handle) and IMO it sucked. Sure, it shifts great but the noise is horrible. Sounds like someone dropped some quarters in the tranny or something. When I took people for rides, they actually thought something was wrong when I got on it. Went back to the factory Hurst with a short stick and it actually has a tighter feel to it due to the higher spring pressure. My 5.0 never returned to the center sometimes. I never thought a shift handle could improve a shifter that much but by getting rid of that stock rubber isolater makes a huge difference. See if you can try someone that has the short stick and then go try a 5.0 and you'll see what I mean.

I'm not sure why the 5.0 makes the noise it does but I would assume its from not having any rubber boots that would help isolate the noise. If you look at the Hurst, it has a small boot inside the shifter itself. I also tried installing the stock rubber boot over the top of the 5.0 (instead of cutting it) along with the rob mod which didn't help the noise go away with the 5.0. Also removed the stops to make sure it wasn't rattling against those. As soon as the factory Hurst went back in, all the noise was gone.

The lack of a rubber isolator on the shift handle is the reason behind all the noise (My B&M sings to me as well...but mobile 1 transmission fluid made it somewhat quieter). It allows the stick to transmit "gear whine" into the vehicle. BUt, the lack of a rubber isolator does wonders for improving shift feel. Good luck!

I should also add that some of the noise could be generated by the handle laying against the shift stops (that the factory hurst is lacking). And, differences in internal shifter construction as well.

The stops were removed on my 5.0 and it didn't make any difference on noise.

There is no rubber isolator in my Hurst (LSS) and it's almost quiet as stock.

ok I'm picking up a pro 5.0 shifter sunday...any tips for the install? I don't have to put the rubber boot over it do I?
Also is there any truth to the guaranteed 2-3 shift mechanism?

Thanks

You're suppose to cut the stock boot and stretch it around the 5.0 shifter base. I didn't do that with mine since a few suggested not to. The problem with that is it eventually tears the rubber boot with the shifter causing small pieces of rubber to get inside the shifter assembly. Not sure about the 2-3 shift but I missed a 3-4 shift with the 5.0 causing my 10 bolt to break.

My tip for your install is to not do it. I wish I would have tried out this shifter before I bought it. It is too notchy for my taste, and even with the shorter handle it still sucks.
The 2-3 shift guarantee is complete and total hogwash. I made well over 300 passes with my stock Hurst only missed a shift once. I bought that Pro 5.0 and miss my 2-3 shift about 4 times in about 15-20 passes. Plus, I've missed in street races which made me lose to slower cars. All in all I hate my Pro 5.0, and I am going back to the Hurst.

I do have the 5.0 and absolutly LOVE it. Yes there is a lil more noise than stock but as long as I know what the noise it I do not worry about it. It is not loud at all, u just hear the gear noise. I did cut and install the rubber boot, no problems here at all. I have taken it apart twice and there is absolutely no way the rubber will get caught in the shifter if u cut it right. I have no complaints about the 5.0, just compliments 100%. I love the way it shifts and I have not missed a 2nd-3rd shift yet, my stock shift I missed 1/4 of the time. I guess it all depends on how u drive and if ur paying attention on how ur shifting.

I've got a 5.0 w/ LSS in mine, and I love it... the top of the shifter is in a perfect (for me) ergonomic location, so shifting feels VERY natural. However, I am thinking about going back to the original 5.0 stick (it's longer than the LSS), since I think I'll need the extra leverage to row faster than I have had to in the past (I am a few days away from getting the car back from a H/C install). We'll see...

As for the notchiness of the shifter, it's not really the shifter that's notchy; it's the transmission. Since there is virtually NO sound deadening/vibration isolation on the 5.0, you end up feeling everything. As for the noise, it doesn't bother me... I usually drive with my hand on the shifter anyhow, and my hand simply laying on the shifter keeps it pretty quiet. However, if you like to drive with both hands on the wheel (like I really should do...), the vibration is just a radio problem... you know... if the noise bothers you, turn up the radio... if the radio can't go loud enough to cover up the noise, then it's time to invest in a louder radio...

I've had a Pro 5.0 for 4 years now and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love the solid feel with every shift, and I NEVER EVER screw up the 2-3 shift. Any extra noise you wouldn't even notice after driving it for a week.
