Default Clutch pedal not consistant!

Here is my problem...

I have a STAR Stage 3 clutch with Gen II Pressure Plate and carbon disc. I also have the updated GM 343 slave cylinder and the McLeod adjustable master. I am 99.999% sure I bled it properly. I had the entire hydraulic system on the bench and used the reverse injection method while keeping the master perfectly level.

After everything was installed, I was able to pump the pedal and it was perfect! Well it was late when I finished so I called it a night. The next morning I got in and there was about 2 inches of "dead pedal" then there was good firm pressure after that. (Mind you, I haven't even started the car since the night before.) So, I pumped the pedal and after about 10-15 pumps it was great again. Now I don't touch the pedal for ONLY 30 seconds and the "dead pedal" is back! Same as before. 10-15 more pumps and it is great! There is no fluid loss to be seen.

So what the heck is going on here?

Mark

Have you done the drill mod? If not, take care of that now. Also, you didn't mention bleeding the slave after your install. If you didn't do that, that's your number one issue. Same thing happened to me after my SPEC install. Rebled the slave, and it was fixed. Good Luck...

I pretty much had the same thing happen to me after my SPEC, adj master, and updated slave install. I would have about half the pedal go away for no apparent reason. It turned out that I was getting a drop or two of fluid on my garage floor every few days or so. I changed out my slave cylinder that only had about 1800 miles on it, and the problem went away. As a matter of fact, when I changed the slave out, everything got easier..the shifting...the chatter..everything. So I think I had a defective slave from the start.

Why would I need to re-bleed the slave? I bench bled the entire system.

You can still get air in the lines when you install them. It only takes about a minute to rebleed it, so why not try it? It solved my pedal pressure problem. Did you do the drill mod yet?

Yes, I did do the drill mod.

LOnSLO - Thanks that was it. I bled the slave last night and the clutch works great now.

That's good news. I just replaced my clutch and hydraulics and my pedal has some inconsistency to the amount of dead-pedal.

It's down right now for some other maintenance, so I haven't gotten around to bleeding it yet.

Glad you got it worked out. I just finished my break-in period (500 miles), and will be flogging it shortly to see how it performs. So far, so good.

Nevermind, I spoke too soon. After 60 miles the thing crapped out again!!! I took it to a local shop to have it looked at.

The verdict:

The new clutch is shorter in hight than the stock clutch. So when the pedal is pressed down, the slave over-extends and breaks!

I wish that pig f*cker at SPEC would have told me I needed to shim the slave. In fact he told me I would NOT need to shim, because I have an adjustable master.

I will never buy a single product from SPEC nor will I ever recommend them to anyone! That guy will tell you whatever it is you want to hear.

That sux. I was told to shim it, and used the green gasket that came with the kit. No probs whatsoever. I think some companies have customer service folks that just don't know what they're talking about. Makes sense to me, though, that you would not need it since you have an adj. master. However, I would think you'd have to be careful on your adjustments with any aftermarket clutch. Sorry you had a bad experience. I've also heard great things about the McLeod REV LOK II.
