Re: 4.56 in an M6
When I had 4.56's in my M6 Hot Rod I did not have to shift into 5th in the 1/4 mile.
On the street they were great over 25 mpg on the highway driving at 80 mph. Rpms were around 2700 in 6th gear.
Now, I have 5.13's and they are bad to the bone.

Re: 4.56 in an M6
Your shift point depends on what cam you have (and tire height among other things). Some setups spin higher than others and can use the lower gear ratio.

Re: 4.56 in an M6
i had a car with 27.3" et drag (the 28x9) and 4.56 and they were SICK and tremendous! no way would you shift into 5th. if you were to run my tire you wouldnt shift into 5th (assuming a 6600 rpm shift point and a 6800 redline) untill after the traps at around 122-123 or so mph (given tire growth just a bit). the 1/8 mile was a friggin blast! if i were to go back and buy a 6 speed, no doubt 4.56s all the way. also, like coach said, i got around 24-25 mpg when i got 26-27 with my 3.42.

With my 4.56's I ran 28x10x15 Goodyears and M/T slicks and never shifted into 5th in the 1/4 mile.
On the street I run the stock tires and got over 25 mpg on the Highway.
Now, I run 5.13's with 30x9x15 M/T slicks.
On the street I still run the stock tires with the 5.13's. You know, stealth mode.

Re: 4.56 in an M6
Another YES for 4.56 gears! At the track I run 28x11.5" Hoosier QTP's and was crossing the traps around 6000 rpms in 4th, so I still have some room for more mods Though I do wish I had gone with 4.88's I think they would be perfect for my setup
Daily driving is not a problem at all. I drove about 80 miles a day for 2 months before I got a beater. On stock tires I spin if I give it more then about 1/2 throttle in 1st and 2nd.

Re: 4.56 in an M6
Thanks guys, I'm definitely switching to a 4.56, I have a 4.11 now and was contemplating going to a 4.30 but I didn't think it was enough of a jump for the money. I think a 4.56 would be perfect. How was 1st gear off the line? Do you shift REALLY fast? My buddy's got a '92 Stang and I drove his car with a 4.56 and I'm out of 1st like nothing.

4.56 and nitrous can be ok. not ideal, but it is teh best of both worlds. my friend tim tosto (his car is in the forsale forum) ran 10.95 on stock internal and those gears with a big 100 wet TNT shot. he did have to shift into 5th just at the traps, but that doesnt hurt ET hardly at all when you are going that fast. i would do it to have a badass motor car.

Re: 4.56 in an M6
I would love to go to either 4.30 or 4.56 but I am afraid the car won't be very streetable. Not in the driveability sense but in a power usage sense. Right now I am running 4.10s in my Moser 12 bolt and put down a conservative dynoed 414rwhp. Right now when I start off from a stop I ride 1st gear up to about 30-35mph and then stomp it, instant smoke, powershift to 2nd..same spin all through 2nd...quick speed shift to 3rd(haven't mastered the 2-3 powershift yet) and still laying rubber until about 3/4 through 3rd. Then I straighten out and have traction.... This is on my 315-35zr-17 BFG Comp T/A Zrs with 75-85% tread. I think with anything higher then the 4.10s I would completely lose any street race unless I drive around on my ET STREETS (26x10.5x16 on 1998 Z28 16x8 rims).
