Default Hurst shifter does not fit

I have a 98 WS6 and I tried to get rid of the stock shifter and swap it out for a Hurst shifter that came out of a 02 WS6 and I couldn't get the shifter to go in correctly. It wanted to sit down and to the right about two inches too far. I left the car in neutral after I removed the stock shifter. Any help on why this shifter did not work would be appreciated.

That shifter should fit without a problem. If you installed the upper handle on the wrong side of the shifter stub shaft, that could be why it is out of position/ skewed.

Nope, handle was where it was supposed to be. Any other guesses?

Ah screw it. I just put a Pro 5.0 in it and it works fine even thought the shop that I bought it from put the stick on the wrongs side.
