Vibration at tailshaft. Need Help please.
OK, I have been chasing a vibration for a year now. Started with the rear. Rebuilt it and was still there. Adjusted pinion angle, left to right possitioning, made sure it was square. No changes. Just had the driveshaft looked at and found the U-joint was sliding slightly inside the slip yoke. Replaced the joint and stip yoke, had it ballanced and still have the issue. WTF!!!??? SO I pulled the shaft again and watched the output shaft turn and appears to spin true. Is it possible that the bad joint messed up the output bushing in the trans tail section (I HOPE)? It was a new upgrade with my last rebuild last season. The vibration got progressivley worse and it does seem a bit better but still obvious. I am out of ideas and money. If it is indeed the bushing I can take off the housing in the car and have the bushing replaced and still hit the track this fall. Any advice is apprecaited. Should note the vibration is clearly coming from under the center console rearward and follows the cars speed, not engine or gear selection.

You can take the housing off w/ the trans in the horizontal posistion. But you will have more than a challenge getting it back on the same way.
The tail supports the shafts, it will be difficult lining it all up.
You can try to pop the seal out with the drive shaft out & see if you can inspect the bushing & see if anything needs to be done.

Vibrations can be hard to locate . Given the fact the vibration is speed related and not rpm related , I would definately place it either at the back of the trans , the driveshaft or posibly a bent axle or wheel .

It is not the wheels, tires or rear for sure. I had the rear apart and replaced bearings, gears and inspected all other parts. If it was the rear or wheels, I would feel it in the rear. I had people sit in the back seat and tell me it was forward of them and in the front say just behind them in the center of the car. Has to be trans related as the shaft has been dyno ballanced this week with new slip yoke and U-joint.

I had a vibration problem when I had my bird. I thought it was drivetrain related also but it turned out to be the wheels and tires out of balance. Just a thought. I would get the re-balanced.

A lot of time the vibration will travel up the drivetrain and you will swear its further up than it is . Obvisously , the vibration is not simple to find so you have to start double and triple checking stuff .

I looked into the tailhousing and looks like the bushing is damaged. I tried to remove it, but it will not come out. Need to remove the tailhousing all together. I have all the bolts out and everything out of the way, but it will not come apart. The RTV is really holding on. Any advise on doing this? I tried prying on the tabs that are on the tranny and I can see it move very little, but not enough to get a tool in the to continue. I actually broke a screwdriver.

That would be really nice. Oh well. Mostly apart and still have to press in the new one. I determined I have two more bolts on to of the trans next to the shifter. Impossible to see from under the car lying on the ground. I will get to them tomorrow and hopefully it will just come apart then. I have had it apart in the past and it is tough even out of the car. I just hope this is the end all solution. I am tired of F'ing with it. Anyone want to buy a fully loaded, 10sec street car??? It's DD able.

I was going through the same problem checked the wheels and tires drive shaft ex. ex. ex. what I found was that my moser 33 spline axle flange was bent I put the car in the air ran it up to a 100 put it in neutral got out and looked at my calipers they were going in and out like crazy. so I put an indicator on them my driver side ranout .038 on the OD and .016 on the face of the flange and the pass was out but not as bad. I had a fresh trans in it for 1 month and it wiped out my bushing from the excessive vibration. so make sure you check your axles out
