No, they don't. I've pulled the stock T56 and rebuilt T56 out of my car many times, along with the current MN12 (GTO) tranny that's in there now. They weigh about 125-135. I'm not saying he should do it by himself on the ground and kill himself, but 170 if you think it weighs 170, you are a lot weaker than you think you are.....or you're on crack.

And if you don't believe me, do a search on T56 weight and I'd put money on the results showing in the 130 range, plus or minus a few.

+1 on them not weighing 170 lbs... I would highly suggest a transmission jack or at least a floor jack with a piece of wood to help guide it/steady it... sure you can bench it up on there but I actually used a motorcycle jack on my cousin's SS when we put the transmission in it, worked really well.

I'm 5'10" and 150lbs and was able to pull it out myself. Just put the jack under it to hold it and when you pry it out keep it balanced on the jack, let the jack down and slide it out from under the car. I had my dad help put it in though, he balanced it as I raised it up with the jack and we both worked together to push on. Wasn't too difficult but was fighting pretty good with it.

Wobbler sockets & 3'+ of extentions. Also a strong *** buddy to bench press the tranny back into place. (Thanks Brandon & Gary)

I've done it many times. On jack stands, with a floor jack, and by myself. Don't lay under it when you pull it out. Use the jack and make sure if it comes down, it doesn't come down on you...

Hahaha Nice topic. I've used a creeper and a skateboard to drop the trans on. Two tall stands and a floorjack for the back of the car.

Long extensions are deff a plus. Also might want to drain the trans before you attempt a removal in the driveway. Also have plenty of rags handy for the tail shaft when/if it leaks.

I have found the need for PB liquid wrench a couple of times. The damned locator pins for the bell housing rusted in there and i couldn't even pry it off with a 3ft. bar. Just wouldn't bugde. A couple of sprays with this junk and the damned thing nearly fell off on its own.

Use a little anti seize on those pins when you put it back together...

Hahaha. 5-11 @ 220 here. I've done the ol' drop on the chest a time or two. Not fun but would do fine in a pinch.

I figured I could drop the sucker on my chest and roll it over onto a blanket or something. Then just get out from under the car and drag the blanket out. WaLa! tranny out from under the car.

That's good advice right there as you will have to tip the tranny backwards to pull it out tail shaft first, otherwise the tailshaft gets stuck on the y-pipe and/or the input shaft gets stuck on the bellhousing.

Been there, done that. I had my cousin helping me with this one, and he had to sit there and hold the front of the tranny while I was battling with the tail shaft trying to get it over the Y-pipe enough that we could get the input shaft out of the bellhousing. It sucked. He was pretty worn out by the time we were done.

Hahaha finally someone else who has found a great use for a skateboard and creeper! I have an old cheap wooden creeper that works great for tranny pulls. Its soaked in fluid, too. Skateboards work great, too!

What size is the spline (for alignment tool). Also, do you guys unbolt the trans from the bellhousing, or unbolt from the engine and take it all at once?
