I just ordered part number 24506531 from gm parts direct. It calls it a bearing, and thats what I'm using.

no part of the bearing race appears to be still in there. in the back of the crank is a freeze plug. but the beat up part before it is the old bearing get that out with a srew driver or something.

My guess is that stuff that came out is some sort of bearing retaining compound to reduce the risk of it spinning in the crank. Or maybe someone before you had a problem where it spun in the crank if the rollers locked up. I wouldn't be too worried about it if you need to use a fair ammount of force putting the new one in. If it slides in real easy clean it as best as possible with methanol after wire brushing and use loctite red to keep it from spinning.

Was that thing making noise?

I just got my trans out and looked at the pilot bearing,it looked to be in good shape. I am going to replace it with a new one, I figured the stock one lasted 100k so I'll go with that.

Thats how mine looked when I did my clutch. It caused my car to make a grouning noise. It looks like the outer piece of the pilot bearing is still in there. You also need to make sure that bad pilot bearing didn't grind down your input shaft.

Make sure the input shaft on your trans is clean and not gouged. If it is you will have to replace/repair it or you will have noise.
