on a 2000 ss? no, you do not need to drop the headers.
but yea, it is kind of a pain in the ***. you will need some one with you to put the new one in most likely.

The hardest part is just getting that U-bolt back in. I've done it a few time so it takes about half hour to do the job. You might want to heat rap the line while its out of the car.
Good Luck!!

I have only done it once and it was not too bad. If I had power tools and the deep wall socket it would of been much faster. I did it solo and took about 40 mins. Stupid star lock washer installed wrong. Took 10 mins to break that bitch out. Would be a ton easier to have someone push in the master while you pull the plunger into proper position though. Sucked for me to keep running from in the car to under the hood.

Same here, sucks by yourself, you have to be a contortionist to keep getting under the dash.

This is how I did mine by myself. It wasn't hard this way at all.
1) Put master through hole and let it rest,
2) From inside of car, pull master in and hook to the clutch pedal,
3) Twist master from inside to align holes, and then stick a 7/16" socket under the metal bracket on the floor, (this picks it up off the floor and away from the holes to allow the u-bolt to go in),
4) Put u-bolt in top first then bottom and push until it hits the metal bracket,
5) Go back inside car, hold one end of the u-bolt, take out the 7/16" socket and it will slide over the u-bolt,
6) You can do either or here: Pull the u-bolt through using the nuts or go back under the hood and push the u-bolt through then bolt it down (what I did),
7) Get friend (or wife) to help bleed it,
8) Enjoy!!!!
Took maybe 20 minutes this way for me.

I just got done changing mine. I put the u-bolt through the master right before I push it in the hole. I push the pedal down and attach the master. I pull the pedal up with the u-bolt attached and then I wiggle the u-bolt and the master until the u-bolt goes in the holes.

so it doesn't make any difference if the trans is in or not huh? I was thinking it would be easier with the trans out. Oh well.
