Default Pilot bearing replacement? Does clutch have to come out?

I am going to have my pilot bearing and slave cylinder replaced soon. Does this require the clutch to come off and go back on? Obviously the transmission will have to be dropped but is that all?

I have never replaced a pilot bearing yet on a standard trans Ls1 but all other standard transmissions and have done my share the clutch has to be remove to get good access to it. I imagine someone will correct me if I am wrong.

There may be a tool out there that has the sufficient reach to get the pilot bearing out and the right fingers to grab it. However, it'd end up being a pricey ****.

Pull your clutch.

I prefer my SK 92522 to a slide hammer tool.

Take your clutch out.

When I took out my pilot bearing (with a slide hammer) it broke into bits and pieces. That would be bad if the bellhousing/clutch was still on).

I just did my clutch. I do not think you would be able to pull the pilot bearing out through the clutch disk. The bearing might be smaller, not sure?? It is easy enough though.....after removing the tranny and clutch bellhousing, just remove the bolts on the pressure plate and the clutch disk and pressure plate will come off. No need to remove the flywheel, the pilot bearing is right there after clutch and pp removal. As you loosen the pressure plate bolts the clutch disk will slip to the bottom of the pressure plate housing. Then when you remove the bolts all the way the clutch disk may try to fall to the floor...thus is when you need to support it. The real trick is lining the clutch disk up again when you put it all together again! If you do not have an alignment tool I read a trick somewhere on the net.....take the input shaft of the tranny, without the bellhousing, and put it through the pressure plate and then slide the clutch disk on the input shaft. Then raise the tranny into position and put the end into the pilot bearing, lining it up as horizonal as possible. The input shaft will line up the clutch disk and center it. Then tighten the pressure plate until it holds the clutch disk firmly and slife the tranny out for final torgueing of the pp. Mark the tranny jack so you can raise it back to the right orientation when you are done, this should make pusging the tranny back on pretty easy!

I used the alignmant tool that came with my spec III....but I had the above technique in my back pocket just in case!!

Good luck! My pilot bearing was a real B@#*&$ to get out!!....even with the slide hammer. The puller fingers kept sliding out of its grip. I finally used a large flathead screwdriver and broke out the bearings so the puller could grip on the bearing race.

The pilot bearing was a pain in the @ss to get out my first time! #$%@%^@! It took us about 3 hours longer then we planned on for my clutch install. Most of the time was trying to find the right tools to get it out. All the guys at the local auto store were clueless. <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />
