Here's my theory... There's no reason to replace it that early to begin with (its a roller needle bearing style bearing) so it's not like an old style that is just greased up. Next, if you don't have the right tools and knowledge to do it, you might as well leave well enough alone. But all of that is just my .02 cents!

Replace it man. While you have the tranny out you might as well.

I used a generic pilot bearing remover and a slide hammer.

If it doesn't come out easily just use a hammer and a chisel to cut the bearing in half. Just make sure the chisel is smaller than the bearing diameter so you dont make contact with the crankshaft.

I just did mine on a 2002 and it was not a roller bearing. This should be replaced everytime you do the job. Mine came apart and almost messed up my input shaft. The input seal started leaking and ruined my clutch. I would say put in a new roller style bearing while you are there.

It is a cheap part and is alot of trouble to get to later if it starts making noise or goes out and it keeps the wobble out of the input shaft on trans. Saves trans. While I had it down I would do it. I did mine about a month ago. Tools $18 for the tool and $20 for the slide hammer at autozone and you can return them and get your money back.

so u just need a slide hammer to get it out? i'd just rather not freak it up and not be able to get it out of there. if it turns ok and feels ok i might just let it alone since i was told by the gm dealership the chances of getting it out of there are slim

just curious.. how tight is the pilot bearing suppose to be on the input shaft because my pilot bearing was all fucked up, needles everywhere, and the input shaft looks pretty burned like it was moving around... im just tryin to figure if the input shaft is bad or not... when i tried the new pilot bearing it slides on easy....

Yes it is tough to get out but not impossible. Just think of it this way, it is in there tight enough that when you take it out it usually breaks.

Just break it so it looses all its strength and then clean out the back of the crankshaft so no metal is left behind.

I agree with this 100%. I used a slide hammer and bearing remover and it came out pretty easy. If it is stubborn soak it overnight with some PB blaster or something and give it another shot. It too much trouble to get to, and can cause too much damage to much more expensive components to be left alone. Do it.

Attached are a few pics of the tool I used.

That is the tool. It is usually pretty tight in the back of the crank and soaking it is a good idea. I have read where people also took a dremel tool and cut it in half to get them out if all else fails or no tools are available.

Do you really want to pull the trans again for a $10 part? IMO replace as much **** while you're in there as you can afford!

you can take a bar of soap and crumble it into the pilot bearing hole and then take a socket and pound in the soap. The pilot bearing will pop out

[crocodile hunter voice] That's a bad, bad idea.[/crocodile hunter voice]

You'll knock a plug into the oil pan on these engines. I rented a blind hole puller with a slide hammer from Autozone to get my pilot bearing out. Took a few times but I eventually removed it.
