I sold my old rebuildable unit, and bought one from a member on camaroz28. He stated the tranny was working fine. I've had it for over a month or two now. I had problems getting it to go into every gear while sitting on the ground, and the guy who sold it along with several other friends told me that the tranny needed to be turned over sometimes in order to go into gears. I went and tested this the other day, and the input shaft does not spin freely. It makes a clunk and is impossible to turn over by hand after that piont(i have the blistered hands to prove it). I tried putting the shifter into whatever gears it would go into hoping I could turn it easier.. no luck. The tranny has no fluid in it though, should it still turn over? It also doesn't have a profound feeling of being in gear whenever I do push it in gear. My previous tranny even though 2nd gear was gone still turned over, as well as went through the gears.

It dosen't sound good. The T-56's that I've installed/reinstalled were both reasonably easy to spin by turning the input shaft. If it was in gear, I was able to turn the input and output shafts by spinning either one of them (input shaft by hand, or the output shaft using an extra yoke. Without seeing it, I can't say what, if anything is broken, but I'd probably have it looked at before taking time to install it. Just my experience....hope it helps.

Ouch.. that doesn't sound pretty. She goes into the tranny shop monday, hopefully. I had a friend come by and he said that in his muscle cars his saginaw 4 spds would get stuck in 2 gears at the same time if people tinkered with it going through gears while outside car not spinning. Think thats possible for the t-56?
Thanks for all your advice,
-Josh

Shifting a T5 without the tailhousing can get you stuck in a gear. It's less likely with a T56 as the stops are in the middle of the trans and still present.
It almost sounds like they tried to assemble the trans and didn't get the synchro blocker rings in place correctly. I did that. Once.
