Default grinding noise when turning

hello all..

im having a grinding sound,,seems to be coming from my drive shaft where it goes up into the tranny when i turn. I can feel it through the shifter, and seems to be coming from that area down below the floor board. It started after i installed my used M12, yes i did install the bigger u-joint on the rear end side of the drive shaft. Here is my original post of the rear end install details....
https://ls1tech.com/forums/gears-axles/959776-rear-end-noise-when-turning-sharp-only.html

i have not yet checked the fluid on my 41000 mile car (i bought used at 29000, never had this problem b4)
Seems to do it when im in gear, sounds like the DS is grinding up against something, but no evidence of any rubbing going on....also very hard to tell bcause i cant "turn the car" and be underneith it at the same time..lol. I also seem to have a vibration when driving straight at aorund 40-ish (not sure if same speed in every gear or not), but have always had one due to needing tires...not sure if its worse now, or just the same as it was... I removed the DS and nothing looked funky there,,all the splines look good,,, can't really see inside the tranny, although my crossmember and y-pipe looked like they are getting some kind of fluid on them. I also noticed that i have one stripped out thread on the rear dr side cross member hole,,the bolt is ok, but had broken threads on it when i removed it, so i cant tighten it up all the way. If its not mentioned in that post, i also installed a Pro 5.0 shifter.

Any suggestions where to look would be greatly appreciated,,,im about to give up and take it in, and get butt raped by a dealership...im just at the point where im running out of spots to look. bad luck for me at every turn all summer long it seems.

shifts fine in all gears.
Stock poly tranny mount also looked ok

Is there a stock DS or a custom unit in there?

The Shaft is stock, i did install the different U-joint on the tail end of it as instructed by the Moser instructions. It is listed on Bob's website as Napa part number 240-0447 (http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com....html?item=146)
When i bought the U-joint, Napa stated that the part number had changed to P447...other than that, the rest is stock to my knowledge (verifiying with original owner that the front yoke set up is all stock as well,,im the second owner)

Typically a noise when turning is in the differential . A bad carrier bearing or even one of the axle bearings or axle gears in the center section could be the cause of the noise .

Sometimes the inner race on the bearing will be gaulded and you will not see it unless you really look closely at the bearing .

lol,,im not even sure where these bearings are at,,,are in they in the axel tube themselves?

another question that kind of relates,,,,i have the TA cover on there (nice piece by the way for all you non TA cover folks) and the fill hole is "higher" that the fill hole on the Moser itself,,,should i "fill to spill" using the Moser hole, or the TA cover hole? I used the hole in the Moser to fill,,,took just over 2 quarts of the Mobil 1 90w75, i also used 1 tube of the additive that i found at a local auto parts place.

The carrier bearings are the bearings on either side of the carrier (center section that holds the ring gear) . Typically those bearings make noise when the vehicle is turning one way or the other while the pinion bearings make noise the faster the car goes in a straight line . If you need to replace one of the bearings , change them all . A bearing kit is cheap and if you are wanting to do a ring and pinion swap , that would be the time to do it as well .

Yes , you can replace the bearings without changing anything else as long as you know what you are doing . I would how ever replace the pinion bearings and races as well and that will require you to set the crush on a new crush collar .

that sounds pretty scary to a rookie like me, hell im nervous about removing the carrier,,,but did a practice run on my old 10 bolt, and it was really quite easy to get it out and back in.....looked the pinion stuff up on Kelliente's gear install write up,,,i may give it a shot. Thanx for your help.

No, there are two largish donut magnets, so you may not see much BUT if there glitter in there, you will see. Until the trans is removed, you may not see any big chunks.

Thanx! Should be ok,,only some test drives after the noise started,,not many miles at all, and all were at around 10 mph, still needs to happen though, just to be safe. after the whole 12 bolt install,,im broke! Dont need any Tranny issues thats for sure.
