In first gear with the clutch out, or is the clutch depressed?

Are you sure its a grinding sound and not the throw out bearing making a growling noise ?

it makes the same sound as when you miss a gear except when you miss a gear its only for a second this does it until the rpms go back down

Sounds like its not going all the way into gear . Turn the car off , put it into 1st gear . Start it back up and rev it in 1st gear . If it does not make the noise , you have a clutch issue .

No you would not be able to drive it if its not all the way into gear . If the noise is there all the time in 1st with the clutch pushed in , its not in the transmission since its not turning .

Based on what you are describing , I'm gonna say its not going all the way into gear .

Well then its something in the engine or clutch because there is nothing inside the transmission that will cause that unless you are not putting it all the way into gear . Did you do like I said about putting it in gear with the car off and then starting it to see if it will make the noise while revving it in 1st with the clutch pushed in ?
