Questions on synchros. Input needed!! I was looking at a used 98 6 spd F-body and the salesmen told me the car was having the synchros in 5th and 6th replaced. The car has 58,000 miles. Is this normal? Does it neccesarily mean the car was shifted incorrectly and/or driven very hard? Does it seem weird that only 5th and 6th's are being replaced and not the others?

Re: Questions on synchros. Input needed!! The salemen can say whatever, thats prolly how much he knows about what it does need.
If it was driven hard, synchro's can be toast.
EDIT; but it is usually 2,3 &4th that get abused.

Re: Questions on synchros. Input needed!! My synchro for 5th was replaced at 18,000 miles. Honestly, how can you abuse 5th & 6th gears; they are overdrives for christ's sake. MY local trans shop was told by their distributor for the new synchro(updated version, not the paper version) that 5th & 6th syncho is a bad design and will typically go bad even if rarely used. I don't know how true that is but my SS has only been to the track maybe 10 runs total and I DO NOT powershift.

If you drive the car hard/wrong, they will all wear out, but its usually 2,3,4...but 5th and 6th arent the same material as the rest and are therefore weaker. If you buy the car, make sure they will warranty the trans for at least 3k miles to be sure the put it back together correctly.

I bought my '98 used and it only had 19K on the clock and I had to have the syncros redone under warenty. took it on my first trip and every time i'd shift from 5-6 or back down it would grind. had it warrenty rebuilt and no problems yet and i have 36k on it now
