T56 - Quarts
I have the T56 Tranny. And it's grinding alot into reverse and is having trouble getting into the gears. I was going to change the oil before anything else. How many quarts do the T56's use? I use ATF Dextron with the Mercon additive. So I wanted to know how many quarts and how much of the additive. Also Any advice on what to do with this problem thanks.

Yeah, it takes just under 4 quarts if you fill it through the fill plug. Last time I did mine I just poured it through the shifter.
Also, bleed your hydraulics if you're having trouble getting it into gear.

I would like to know the Mercon additive you mention. Is it a friction modifier? Is it the stuff that is also put in rear ends? If so- that could cause a shift problem in a T56. How was it you went down the additive road?

It holds 4 quarts and pouring it in through the shifter is the easiest way to refill it. Just regular automatic trans fluid, dexron mercron III is the standard fill, there is no "additive". I use Pennzoil Synchromesh though, and like it alot.
To be honest with you, and your not gonna want to hear this, but changing the fluid isn't going to solve the issues your having. Sounds like it's time for a rebuild.

Well thanks for the help again. I love the site, lots of help here! And I'm already thinking on the rebuild. I live in a SMALL town in Texas..and does Six Speed Inc. just send the rebuild kits, or will they do it? How and such??

Yeah i don't know much about the additive. I had just bought the car like 3 months back. The whole car was done good! I have had no problems, it's just now I see they never did the Tranny. But I'm still not complaining, it was a hell of a deal. Just should have though about the T56's not holding that much power stock ha.

They are from Houston and I think around a thousand or so is the price for a decent upgrade and if I am not mistaken they have went in with or sold to LMR. They are both sponsors on here.

The symptoms your having have nothing to do with power output. The stock T-56 can handle a good amount of power. What happens first with these trannys can happen with only bolt-ons, or even while bone stock. The aluminum 3-4 shift fork get's tweaked, the slider keys are stamped and therefore get mangled, the fork pads are plastic, and when the clutch and hydraulics aren't up to par anymore from wear, the syncronizers take the abuse cause the clutch is no longer fully dis-engaging.

When it's just 1 or 2 individual gears, instinct says transmission internals, if it's all gears acting up the same way, possible clutch/hydraulic issue. Reverse and 1st would act up the worst as most of the time you are putting it into gear from a stop at that point. The others would act up and grind.
Check the hydraulic fluid first, give it a good bleed, you just may be fortunate that it's cooked fluid.
