Default Somebody school me on going to the track!

Hey I'm just looking for someone to give me a real quick rundown on going to the track. I've never been and would really like to go and see what my camaro can do. So basically what I'm wondering is how do you get started? Do you just show up one day and go? Are there Any special things I should know before I head to ORP? Like when to go, when not to, any special safety stuff I'd need, if there's anything specific about tires, etc. I'm in trafalgar, so ORP is the closest to me. I also heard there is an 1/8 mile track in Brown County, but i've heard it's kind of rickety. I got on there website and didn't really understand the schedule, but I haven't gotten on ORP's yet. Are there Any set in stone things with the schedule? Or does it just vary week to week. Sorry for the ignorance guys, just lookig for some guidance. And also I'm only 18, is that going to be a problem at the track? I wouldn't think so but again I have no idea. Haha

If you need a tour guide, lmk!
I'll fill you in on anything you do not know or understand! Also, I'll go out there with you if you need a person to show you the ropes! I was scared shitle$$ my first time. And don't worry about the shakey feeling and that turning in your stomach when your staging and ready for the light to turn green! Thats PURE adrenaline, and after your 1st pass you will LOVE it!
Hell you'll prolly become a track ***** like I was at 1 time. lol

For a beginner, Tuesday night street legals will be best for you. You'll get a few runs in (maybe 4-7 runs) and you will be able to watch LOTS of people and what they do. Kinda helps to see how other people do things.

Just know that if you have a convertable car or run faster than a 14.0 (13.99) you will need a helmet. And you MUST wear pants and a long sleeve shirt when racing! After you get out of the car you can wear whatever, but when on the track it's Mandatory!

PM me if you have any questions or anything!

James

Just go there and hang out, watch and observe till you get the feel of how things work. Ask questions, most racers there will be more than happy to help you out.

go on a test and tune night or wha ever your track calls it, like stated anything faster than 14.0 a helmet is needed and if you have slicks you need a drive shaft safety loop i believe. when you roll up to the water box try and go around it and back into it to do your burn out if you have street tires up front instead of skinnies.

Any idea what I could run? Obviously the first time out I'll just be getting used to it, but eventually what should I be shooting for?

well my first time at the track with my 6 speed i ran 13.6 @ 103... that was bouncing off the rev limiter in 1st gear... on a completely stock car.

your mods should put you in 12s no problem... as long as you hook up especially in an auto.

12.6 if you're running at ORP's shitty prep track.

With those mods you should be knocking on 11's door with full bolt ons, stall, cam, and DR's if not in the 11's. If not I would say its just because of lack of experience.

Since he is new at this, and it is ORP which thinks VHT is made of Gold, I still say 12.6. On a good track, and lots of seat time, in cooler weather, it may run a high 11.

Ya I'm gonna need a lot of seat time though. Haha. Any quick advice on launching? My car has dr's on the back, but they aren't in perfect shape. Would I be best to brake stall it to say 1500 rpm, or should I just go from an idle? I know there are alot of variables, and I'm gonna have to just see what works from experience, but just looking for some ideas.

Autos are not necessarily easier to launch...you still have to let out when they spin out of the hole. Good luck. You will have fun your first time. I would think with some traction you could get a 12.2 out of it. I would not try to get too much traction with the stock rear though.

ORP isn't open today since they have Friday's Midnight Madness this week. I will be there in my Cobra.
