Unhappy sandbags?

hello
Last winter i ran off the highway when i hit a patch of ice.
Does anyone know if sandbags in the rear would help?
I'm dreading the winter storms.

They help for sure.

I would got to Menards and get those $2.95 tubes of sand, usually two. I put on in back and one in the passenger side footwell. I usually only had the one in back in the car. Helped tremendously, I drove a T5 92 GT from 92 to 97 in Chicago winters, and then a M6 98 SS in 98 and 99 in the winter.

Snow tires would rock people sell used setups all the time on www.mfba.org.

sand bags definetly help.. Before i got my GTP i would sand bag my Peugeot (rear drive) every winter... had to drive the TA once in the winter ... sand bagged it and helped alot

But snow tires are the ultimate... I got an extra set of rims and snow tires for my GTP... works awesome in the snow ... seems like alot of money at first (snows and wheels) but if you only use them in the winter... and live in a climate like this... they'll last for a LONG time and are well worth the money

Sand bags help for 2 reasons. 1) the added weight. 2) you can use the sand for traction if you do get stuck.

Blizzaks and about 140lbs of sand. Does wonders. Definately spend the money to do this...$500 now or $5000 later when you get the car out of the body shop.

I've commuted to Indy and back (77 miles round trip) for over 10 years without ever adding weight to my cars in the Winter. I drove an '82 Citation 4 cyl. from Sept '93-Jan '95, '88 Camaro V6 from 'Jan '95-Dec '99, and the T/A from Dec '99-Summer '00. All three were automatics. Never got stuck or missed a day of work...This year I have a 4x4 truck to handle the Winter weather and we've yet to get anything that'll even stick to the ground for more than 2 hours....but then again Winter hasn't officially started yet

I'm not saying that using sand bags is a waste of time. I think it would actually be a good thing to do. I was just sharing my experience of never doing it myself.
