Default OBD1 Emissions in IL

I just got my emissions notice, and I know my car will not pass. I have long tubes and no cat. I do not really want to go buy a new y-pipe and a cat, nor do I want them to drive my car. (Last time, the guy rode the **** outta my clutch)

I heard you can get a P.O. Box in a county that doesn't require testing and register your car to that. Does anyone know if this is true? Or does anyone have another idea of how to avoid taking my car in and getting it tested?

Time for a race car exemption! go here http://www.epa.state.il.us/air/vim/forms/show-car.pdf and fill it out and send it in along with pics of your car w/ a nitrous set-up (real or borrowed) and why else it is a race car. Don't worry about how it says that race cars are uninsurable. As long as it is street legal your insurance will still cover you. Infact, they don't even have to know about the exemption anyway. When they give you the exemption all you have to do is re-submit the pics every 2 years. Good luck!

That is exactly what I do. My brother-in-law has been a district manager for emissions in Illionois for 10 years and that is the best route for anyone to take. If you have Allstate Insurance you can even still get full coverage.

I didn't know that. That's awesome. I might have to apply for that. I was going to a while ago but always thought my insurance would get dropped.

no milage limit for race car exempt, only with the show car status do you have a milage limit.

So it doesn't matter that it says they need a copy of your insurance saying its a race car? Just the regular policy will work? As far as taking pics with Nitrous..so just like take a few pics of my car at the track and then take one of nitrous photoshopped into my car?

I'm pretty sure you have to show the state a copy of the show car insurance policy. Not race...you wouldn't be covered at the track anyway so just insure it as a show car that you sometimes drive.

I applied for the race car exemption, never had to show any proof of insurance to the IEPA (because race cars are not insurable) or given any information to the insurance company. I have never had to change my insurance b/c of the exemption, it's still normal insurance coverage.

Nice. What town are you in? Who are you insured with? (if you don't mind me asking)

And the race car exemption doesn't change your registration at all? I can still get plates like normal, and if I was pulled over it wouldnt come up that it was a "race car" on their screen?
