Default Winter Car

Just wondering what some of you guys drive in the winter. I'm looking for something that is good in snow and gets good mileage. I plan on spending $2000-$5000. Any suggestions or cars you've had great luck with.
Thanks, Justin

'97 Escort wagon. It's been running strong for several years...218,000 miles. It's not cool but it gets the job done. Gotta love a beater

'99 Grand Am. Not real exciting, but it's been a great car!
Might be selling it soon, not sure though (I want a Grand Prix).

My car is a daily driver, Z is a nice Saturday car. Its a 94 Sunbird LE. Red with a aqua green/blueish hood and finder lol. Gets me around 26mpg with the A/C blowing.
My old beater was a 96 cavalier. With a good tune up and an easy foot I got 30mpg in that car.
I paid $1,200 for the bird when it was all red hahaha. Paid near 2k for the cavi.

Out of the Cavie and the bird I would say the Cavie was better in the snow but it also had a little better tire.

I was thinking about an escort or maybe a subaru. A WRX would be sweet but realistically I would get a regular Impreza or an outback sport or something like that. Anyone know much about those. AWD would be a plus but I don't know how reliable they are.

All of the winter, and most of the rest of the year my workday daily driver is a '96 Bonneville SE. 3.8L Series II motor, never gets stuck in the snow, gets about 26-28mpg with 75% highway/25% city driving, and is VERY comfortable. Actually the power is not bad at all for what it is.

I liked the 3800 Series II motor so much that I bought an '02 Monte SS with the same motor. That car is actually a lot of fun to drive, considering it's a FWD V6. But I still keep the Bonneville around because it's worth more to me as an extra car to drive than what I'd get for selling it.

I used to have a 91 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. AWD, AWS, turbo, ran a 13.8. Fun to drive but still did well in snow, now i have a 96 Grand Cherokee that is also great in snow, but the mpg isnt quite as good.

I'm looking for something that gets good mileage and goes pretty decent through the snow. Definately no trucks or suv's.

Does it need to be AWD?

Our 95 Civic 5spd FWD is very good in snow. I had a 95 Lumina 4 dr that was great in snow too.

87 chevrolet sprint here. gets 45+ mpg and the little bastard will push snow with the front bumper.

i really only drove it as a daily for 6 months or so - 3 years ago. i have a company vehicle i drive almost everywhere now. i've kept it around just because it runs so well, requires so little maintenance, and gives me something to put all my car part stickers on. the little car has grown on me..

I had an 02 WRX 5 speed and beat on it for 20,000 miles. I had snow tires on it and it was rediculous in the snow and rain. It was more reliable than any of the 5 fbodys ive ever owned. Get it!! Its just not a rocket...14.4 @ 94 in the 1/4.
