Default Flip Down License Plate

hey guys,

UPDATE 3/19 INSTALLED!!!!
Now you see it

Now u dont

i have been brewing up an idea for awhile now, and i decided im going to fab it up tomorrow.

i live in illinois and they say u NEED 2 plates on the car at all times. SO....i am fabricating a flip down front flat for the ss. They have them out there but they are like $70, screw that.

No this is not some james bond, flip the license plate while driving type of deal!

just a way to put it down when im driving around and put it up for shows.

im going to use (2) .5 inch thick plexi glass peices to hindge together and screw the license plate into the other. then when i want it up (hidden), its either going to be velcro (prob not) a tiny latch (like on the back of a picture frame) or somehow to rig up a magnet......

i DO NOT want a motorized one as cool as it would be, this is just a cheap way to go from on to off without being a pain in the ***.

any comments or ideas to make this better?????

thanks

kevin

PS,
I got pulled over 4 times in a week for no front plate and yes i had it bolted on the air dam but that ticket was labeled (illegal display of front license plate) so this IS going to happen......the bottom line is, ILLINOIS SUCKS!

I'm wondering how bad my new State Trooper neighbor wants to just write me up for the multiple violations I am guilty of? No front plate, window tint (5% all around), loud exhaust, no emmisions stuff, etc.

I still rock my "Hell yes I street race!" license plate bracket too. My buddies just laugh when they come over and see his car parked in front. I think since we're neighbors and get along he's gonna let me be, hopefully he doesn't give any of his co-workers the heads up to look for me. I'm kinda hoping maybe I can hook him up with a repair on something in his house and get a "get out of jail free" card, so to speak.

hey guys, got it fabbed up today.....
i used 2 metal hinges
.25 inch thick lexan
factory front license bolts
and a clasp and hole latch

i am smoothing out the bottom tonight along with cutting off the excess bolt that screw in the LP, once they are grinded down, it flips back perfect! there is a tiny hook at the bottom that is barley noticable and i put a tiny latch thingie under the bumper, cant see anything!!!!

ground clearance is not an issue also!

citrique please!!!

thanks guys!

If it's up and you can't see it, can't the cop give you a ticket anyway?

Orland pulled me over in my last car too. Driving along normal and he pulled a U like he was in high speed pursuit. I have it on my WS6 now because I know theyd pull me over with that , along with tint and probably hand me a loud exhaust ticket too. What I didnt realize was the front plate cover will fit even with the plate on , so technically I could say my front plate is on with my bird cover over it.

How are you going to keep it from swaying from the wind while driving? I'm sure it'll hide itself once you reach a certain speed. I like the concept, I just have mine on the passenger visor and have been looking for another solution. Can't wait to see it installed.

That is a real good idea and if you figure out a way to do it to the back too, with a drivers seat operated control you don't have to worry about camera tickets at the lights.

If you dont have it displayed on the bumper where its supposed to be you might as well not have it on the car at all , they can give you a ticket for improper display. Example , on the dash , on the air dam under bumper , etc.

I think the point is that he will have it displayed all the time except for shows and what not.

I am assuming, it sways in the wind while your driving. If that's the cause, when your driving, the air is going to cause it to flip up, and it will look like you have it hidden away. And there goes your ticket again. Unless you have a stiff back for it.

IMO it kinda looks cheesy.

Dude pull that thing off your car. I'd either put a plate in the stock location or deal with getting tickets.

I have seen something similar on a custom volvo where they used a hood latch release cable to pull a pin that would allow the plate to drop down. There was a spring on the pivot to swing the plate down. The pin was also spring loaded to return to the lock position. So when you pull the cable the plate drops down. Then you just push the plate up and 'click' it locks up and out of the way. Pretty slick set-up.
