I think it depends on what part of Kentucky your from. I live in So. Indiana and work in Louisville, KY and everybody in this area considers KY to be in the midwest. But this could be because people in No. Kentucky don't want to be associated with the bare-foot, inbred hillbillys in So. and Eastern KY. There was an article in the Louisville paper a couple months ago that said Kentucky has more adults that have lost all their natural teeth than any other state in the country. How many do you have left?

Well your logic of being one state away from the Atlantic Coast doesn't work either because your are one state away from the border of Nebraska, which is midwest and arguably west because the tree line goes through Nebraska. Just face it, you're in the middle. And the midwest term comes from a long time ago when KY was considered the west (as mentioned by someone earlier). As evidenced by the various map groupings and opinions, you are not clearly anything. This is the coolest local section on tech so deal with it.
