The guys in the shop were a little bored yesterday, and got a kick out of Nates animation, so they figured a Brad and Joe conversation would be good to add.

I think Drew and I solved the clutch mystery.

We pulled the bellhousing last night and when I did, I noticed there were no dowels on the block to align the bellhousing. Apparently, the guy he bought the motor from removed them (kinda weird).

When we originally mated the tranny/engine, we had the transmission and bellhousing together, so the input shaft aligned everything. When Drew was pulling the car into storage last year, he bumped a lip on his barn on the underside of the car, and that's when the slave failed. As best we can tell, because of the lack of dowels, the transmission shifted slightly when it was bumped, which caused the slave to fail.

Jump to this spring, we pulled the trans off the bellhousing, rebuilt it, replaced the slave and reinstalled it to the bellhousing (which was still misaligned). Bleed clutch and the new slave fails just like the old one (when we pulled the slave out, it was jammed all the way out. Even with no fluid we had to use a vise to get it to actuate freely). I have a spare motor with dowels on it that I pulled off, and we will put them on Drew's motor, get the alignment taken care of and reinstall everything (with a new slave, again) and I think all will be fine. The pressure plate, clutch disc and flywheel all looked fine.

The joys of wrenching...

Wow! Some of you guys in this forum seem to really know your stuff and I assume that comes from doing all your own work, which is pretty cool.

I'm just too cheap to pay others for labor. Thus I have to figure out what I'm doing (or at least do a good job pretending).

Legs made it, bellhousing was pretty pissed off. had that all welded up and then i broke the transmission. I am currently installing a McLeod steel bellhousing. That should keep my legs and feet protected should this ever happne again.

I have a one man bleeder Darren, not as cool as a mityvac, but it gets the job done. Simple and effective without having air seep in when bleeding.
