I love my beltronics.
Beltronics and escort are the same company.
Beltronics will also by any radar dector that you currently have and put that money towards the purchase of one of theirs if you buy from beltronics direct and not a reseller like best buy.
I have had 3 beltronics and all of them work great and could detect even if the line of sight was blocked

i hear the valentine one is best.
in refernece to the shield comment, i believe you are referring to a radar jammer, and that is highly illegal if caught with one, only laser jammers are legal

I have an Escort 8500 X50 and it's great (not under 200 dollars though). I've used a Valentine One and Beltronics RX65 (I think that's the name). All three (X50, V1 and RX65) were about equal in performance from what I've seen, though the V1 does have the directional arrows.
Under 200 dollars is hard to get a top shelf detector unless you go used on Ebay.

Yeah, I think you should go ahead and save up a little more $$$ and get a higher-end radar detector. IMO the higher-end ones like the Valentine 1, etc. will last a lot longer in terms of technology anyways, so that's another advantage to them....

if you want a good detector youre looking at least $300 new. its not something you would realy want to cheap out on and regret later you know? i have a Escort 8500 as well and it works great. i wouldnt risk a jammer. theyll f*ck you if you get caught with one. and the only ones ive seen run like 1k+ anyway.

radar jammers are illegal. laser jammers are not, as stated above.
FCC made illegal to jammer any and all radio frequencies.
You can spend over a $1000 for a detection system setup, however around $250 to $350 would get you a good radar detector. besides having a good detector, it comes down to how smart you are with it.
