Default Engine removal from the top writeup

I will be pulling my engine out as soon as my Happy Hooker arrives (sometime next week, I hope). Does anyone know of a good writeup on this method?
I have searched the forum and found several on bottom removal, but none from the top.
I have mechanical skills, an engine hoist, and lots of tools in my garage. I also know enough to remove all the accessories, hoses, wires, etc. I would just like to find a nice writeup on it. The trans will stay in the car, btw.
Thanks in advance.

Remove the trans and it comes out without a hitch from the top. We left the hood on and all.

i have removed my motor with the trans still attached from the top with the hood still on multiple times, just gotta watch what you are doing. get the car really high up in the front and get a couple people to watch it as it comes out. if you are just pulling the motor and leaving the trans then that's a one person job, no problem.

Hmmm.. I am thinking I am gonna do mine from the bottom, just cause I have never done one that way... Pulled all sorts of engines out the top though.

Now to find me about 20gs to do a proper LSX buildup.

Can't help you with the 20g's, but our cars were designed by GM to remove the engines from the bottom. But the Happy Hooker claims to enable the user to remove it from the top. But it does require you to rotate the engine 90 degrees while still in the engine bay.
SilverGhost, it sounds like you raised the front of the vehicle so high that you were able to lift the engine/trans vertically out of the engine bay, is that correct?

Hey george, I pulled my engine out of the Z both ways. And I think both ways are pretty easy honestly.
The top was REALLY easy by myself though. All I did was removed the Transmission (I tried taking the engine/trans. out together, but I needed someone to guide it.) so I just pulled the trans. out and the motor came RIGHT out in like 10 minutes. And the best thing is I didn't need to remove the hood or support the vehicle with anything to get the engine out.

I'd pull it out the top honest. If not you'll need to get an allignment when the K-Member goes back in... Along with a friend to help you pull the drivetrain out from under the car!
If you need any tips, LMK!

I've pulled my engine out the top before and actually just did mine today. Just remove the harness, headers, radiator, etc. Unbolt the trans (might need to find something to support the front of it with), and yank her on out, seems to go pretty easy, just take it slow and have someone help guide her out

yeah, just get the car way up on some big stands. if you do that you can guide the motor and trans out together even with the hood on. just put the hook a little more towards the front of the motor on the chain so it hangs everything on an angle when you lift it and have a person on either side to lift up on the back of the trans if necessary to clear the front bumper on exit.

Yes. Apparently their database server is down. I also checked on fleabay, where I bought mine, it has not been updated. Even when their site was up, I was unable to navigate to the HH. I had to go to fleabay, then backtrack to TPIS in order to see it on their website. Poor website design and management, perhaps?

We pull almost all of our motors from the top bud. We just pulled the motor and tranny out of my white TA as one piece a couple weekends ago. We also pulled both motors out of the Vettes from the top.

We do use the Happy Hooker, and it makes it a snap.

No need for facy equipment. Me and buddy did it several years ago. witha cherry picker and standard engine leveler.

Remove the accsesories, harness, intake ect... Basicaly a bare long block. Unbolt the trans and when lifting the engine tilt the rear down as far as possible and up and out it come.

We did it once. We drop them out of the bottom now. 6 bolts and a some grounds and it is out. It just easier IMO.

My buddy made one of those fance pullers with a piece of steel. Cut out the shape of the valley cover, mark and drill the holes, and then welded on one of the old pullers used to bolt onto carbs. Worked perfect.
