I just thought I'd let you know I was TDY for my NTC rotation getting per diem (although it was like $4 a day haha), and now I'm in San Diego in a class that gets out at 2 o clock in the afternoon getting full per diem,

It's called substandard living conditions compensation and I don't know if it's true or not. It might be for the remfs but we don't get it. We do get a special duty pay, though

So what is the school like? which diff. ones do you have to do? Did you come in as tacp or did you cross-train? Do alot of people fail out of training? How hard is it compared to PJ or Combat control?

I came in TACP, I think it's like 60% wash back, 40% wash out completely, I made it through first time though (/thumpchest). You go to the school-house, then SERE school, and Airborne school if you get orders to an airborne unit (Italy, Bragg, or Alaska) as a first duty station. It's not nearly as hard as CCT or PJ (mostly because their is no swimming), but it still gets rid of the people who can't hack it. Basically you get smoked all morning then go to class all afternoon. Most people ***** out during hell week. You just have to want it and stay healthy, it's honestly not that terrible.

Side question:

What is the difference between a CCT and TACP?

CCT's mission is to secure landing and drop zones, and then provide air traffic control from austere locations. TACP's mission is to ensure the safety of ground personnel by exercising positive control over close air support missions.

That's the book answer, nowadays however we do the same thing, with most TACP's supporting conventional units and CCT supporting SOF. TACP's are still the specialists though, and can try-out for a Ranger/SOF assignment.

Okay so CCT is just a remote ATC and TACP's call in the heat.

So TACP's are ALO's on steroids eh? (ALO= Air Liaison Officers)

haha, that might be the officer point of view. ALO's don't really do anything. They are JTAC certified but they really just supervise the enlisted JTACs. Generally each flight in a squadron has an ALO, and they are just doing their 3 year controlled tour pilots have to do.

Ahh, from our side ALO is a lot nicer than getting chained to a desk.

Thanks for the info!!!

I'm sure theres guys out there who were great ALO's (my ALO right now is awesome), and did some cool **** on the ground, but it's probably 1 out of every 10 to have claimed to do anything.

I didn't know you guys went through all that just to get to hang out with us Army guys. Thats pretty crazy. I thought you guys were just normal Air Force guys that had a job the required you to be with us. I never asked what it took to do it, I just made an assumption.

Yea man, graduation standard is like a 275 or better on the Army PT test, a 12 mile ruck with ~85lbs of crap, plus by the end you have learned about 6 different radios, land navigation, cqb, etc.

TACP's are the redheaded stepchildren of both branches.

The Army doesn't want them because they are Air Force, and the Air Force doesn't know what to do with them

They have become some of the biggest unsung hero's though with what they do regardless of what either branch thinks. Why they win all the awards at every AF base and **** off the Finance weenie who did 200 hours of volunteer work and got a CCAF in a year to the guy who killed 100 Hadji's and saved xx amount of lives in the process all while under fire.

If I have learned anything in 21 years of service and more deployments than I care to count. Its that everyone has a job and all of them are important. Some aren't glamorous and some downright suck. But at the end of the day everyone is there to support that poor son of bitch on the ground that asks for nothing in return other than a shower and some food, whenever they can get it. From pilots to a finance clerk everyone works for the infantryman and his plight as the guy at the end of the sword that does the deed face to face and hand to hand. They are the true heros and no one should ever forget their place in the support of him.
