I did this to a butter bar fresh out of the Point. Me (E4) and my section Sargent (E6)were tooling thru the motor pool (tank battalion type, we had an M577 {? M113 command track} for the FDC for 4.2" mortars) when we passed a newly minted LT. Sarge salutes and I don't. This enrages the LT who thinks I'm being disrespecful (I was, but that's another story). He shouts in my face, "Specialist, do you think you don't have to show any respect for my rank?". Point in fact: back then hardly anybody saluted in the motor pool otherwise we'd never get anything done. I promtly shout back, "SIR! When in the presence of an NCO his entourage comes to the position of attention while he salutes for everybody." Lt looks startled and says, "I'll have to check on that and get back to you. Carry on!" He gets back to me 3 days later and appologizes for being in the wrong. Me being the type that skirted around every rule I could (hence one of the many reasons I didn't re-up) it was helpful knowing certain parts of the UCMJ backwards as well as forwards.

P.S.: This was back in the middle 70's.

Addendum: It's not like I couldn't respect authority - I couldn't respect "ignorant" authority. Case in point: One of the LT's I served under (it was his 1st command - mortar platoon, 1st Btn, 6/32 Armor) commanded the utmost respect from me and every one else in the platoon. He actually knew more about my job than I did. He is currently a Major General over in Iraq. His name is MG James Thurman.

We had a barracks party up in the 33 area on Pendleton. Music was definitely too loud and we were definitely drinking too much. Naturally, boot LT that was the ODO that day came around to see what all the noise was about. He at first was polite and standing outside the door until he saw a particularly young looking PFC. He proceeds to step in the room with a bunch of drunk NCOs and junior Marines and start chewing *** and asking for ID cards. The owner of the room, Cpl Salty Dog who got out two days later, cuts him off mid-sentence and asks who in the F he thinks he is and how long he's been in the Corps. LT replies he's been with the FMF for 2 months. Upon receiving this news he was laughed out of the room by nearly everyone there and not heard from again.

Genral Thurman is a good officer. Hes a general for the soldiers. I met him a few times and the guys I work with at my job know him very well from back in the day and told me some good stories about him. He came by one time to check on training at the simulator and he came in full battle rattle gear, kevlar, LCE, he wore all the gear that his soldiers were wearing for training. I was impressed to say the least. This guy had no entourage or any of that typical general officer kiss *** ****, just him and his driver and Humvee. He almost seemed to blend right in with the soldiers.

Yeah, that sounds like the LT I knew back in the day. He was about as unpretentious as an officer could be.

1. Alaska and -20*, yes thats negative 20
2. A field problem that has lasted way to long, 3 weeks at that point
3. An RTO, my buddy, myself and 2 other 11B's board out of our minds
4. A 4' section of metal rod we found
5. A can of OD spray paint
6. A new west pointer

We were sitting around in a patrol base and this new LT was complaining about the static on the squad radios "ordering" my buddy to fix it, yeah he can re-design the radio so it wont be a piece of ****. We get tired of this fast. We found this rod and came up with the OE-259 Squelch Stop Bar. Basiclly we sprayed this bar OD and after it dried we told him that what you do is jam it in the ground in the center of the PB and tie all of the radio ant's to it with 550. "Really that will work?! Well what are you waiting for!" 6 radios were tied to this bar in the center and this guy accually thought it had worked The best part was when the commander came buy to talk to the LT in the middle of the night and tripped over 6 strings of 550. When he asked the LT what the hell was that for the LT took credit for the OE-259 singing its praises. "YOU MUST BE THE BIGGEST RETARD ON EARTH" was the only thing that the commander said.
The LT was relived on the spot. The PSG was put in charge, as if he wasent already running every thing, and the LT was sent to run the supply shop for the next 6 months.

THis story wasn't really funny... just proved to me that some "leaders" were born to follow. At SERE school my buddy and I were in charge of dragging a 2LT throughout the entire evasion course. After day two she sits down in an open field (with the aggressors only 150yds behind us), starts crying, and screams "I GET THE POINT! I DON'T WANT TO PLAY ANYMORE! I JUST WANT TO GO HOME!" I tackled her, kept my hand over her mouth, and my partner and I had to drag her behind a fallen tree. We tried to explain to her the hell we would go through if she got us caught, let alone that we would have to redo SERE school. All she could do was sit there and cry. Good thing it wasn't for real cuz I would have reported that "the enemies got her". That and she started crying when we killed a rabbit since she thought it was "senseless" Damn LT.... must have got her bars from PETA.

So I had them a hammer and and white chalk. Tell them to tap on the Bradley and find all of the soft spots on it and then circle it with the chalk. So the PVTs are all doing this. Us NCO's are all laughing and he comes are new LT. He asked us what the PVTs were doing to we explained to him that they are looking for soft spots on the Bradley.
LT asked us if we had an extra hammer and here he is hammering away on the Bradley and marking all the spots. They all finish checking for soft spots. Then I tell them that we are going to check the shocks. So I have a PVT and LT standing next to me looking at the shocks with two PVTs up on top of the Bradley jumping up and down trying to get the shocks to move.
The LT gets on top of the Bradley and the other PVT. So here you have three PVTs and an LT jumping up and down trying to get the shocks on the Bradley to move. Still there is nothing going on. Two of us NCOs are laughing at them.
Then my CPT walks up and pulls me to the side and said that the LT was off limits for the NCOs and that was his job of breaking in the new LTs. After my CPT leaves with the LT. My CSM and 1SG walk up and give give me high five and told me that was a good job.

for some of you the shocks are filled with grease. You are not going to move those shocks. They are mainly there to keep the tracks tight.

good story, been there done that.. btw, i was at garry owen in 99, im a bradley MG, i ran several ranges for you guys... and i personaly Q2'd your LTC..

I'm out now so I can say this in the open. Women should not be in a combat related mos...which equals damn near every mos these days. I know there are some great women in the military. I've served with and been led by a few of them, but they are few and far between.

Here is my story, underway on the USS Michigan, Admiral Al (big Al the sailors pal)Kanetsky is onboard with us doing a VIP cruise. We have a crews lounge with a TV. Our Chop (supply Officer) was showing the Admiral around who buy the way at the time was Comander submarines Pacific, so he knows about submarines he commanded more than 1.
He comes into the lounge where we are all eating, all the VIPs were eating in our regular spot the Crews Mess.
The chop says "Here is our crews lounge oh and this sir this is a TV." I say (I was an E5 at the time ET2) "Hey chop the Admiral is a pretty smart guy. I am sure he knows what a TV is, He may even have one at his house."
Well the Admiral was laughing so hard he turned red and started tearing up. All the chop could muster is "And that is Petty Officer Friend a very good radioman and our resident smart ***."
He came over shook my hand and thanked me for a good laugh.
Ah good times...

By the way Admiral Kanetsky was the best thing to happen to the Sub force in a long time, to bad he had to retire. Was a 3 star when he did.

I had a butter bar sit next to me on the crew bus one morning. He had a nice big, steaming cup of coffee. I didn't realize he had set it on the seat between us until it cracked open and soaked the *** of my flight suit. He blamed me for spilling it, of course. The worst part is that we were at Eilson AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska. It was -22 degrees outside and we had to stand and wait for the PAX terminal to open. My *** was frozen and I had to keep cracking the ice off until we got inside. He even went so far as to ask me to buy him a new cup of coffee. What a dick.

not exactly an LT story but about a year ago i was working on the quarter deck at campen brig and LTGen Mattis decides to come by for a visit. now following the SOP and being the locked on PFC i was i decide to ask the general to empty his pockets and step through the metal detector. apparently when youve got 3 stars on your collar you can pretty much do anything you want and he was more than a little irritated. needless to say the CO and i had a heart to heart later that day.

That **** is ridiculous, I cant stand officers that think they are above the rules that they themselves make up. They think they are just so special and rules dont apply to them. Way to lead by example.

This one division commander made everyone wear a helmet when in a military vehicle at all times, yet he does a change of command ceremony with him STANDING in the back of a HUMVEE riding around with a beret on. Too bad he didnt fall out and break his skull. Way to lead by example again.
