Not true...I used to be an AF helo crew chief assigned to several combat search and rescue squadrons. Being we worked closely with the PJs I've seen many SrA (E4) PJs. I assume Combat Controllers are the same way.

To the original poster, I agree that he's full of **** about being a SEAL. Real SEALS, or any other SF folks for that matter, usually don't brag about that kind of stuff.

nevertheless, i stand corrected by those who work/have worked alongside SF guys. my bad.

Call the ****** out in the office, You'll find its quite humerous there were a couple people here where I work who claimed to be SF. I've met 1 person that I know of who was in special forces and I didn't even find out about untill a couple of weeks ago and we've been friends for a couple of years.

Yea I got his full name and SSN so I will run it and call him out. I just hate seeing posers. Hell if you served be proud and don't lie about it. I've been in the AF 20 years and i'm not in the Special forces, it takes a different breed to do that. But thanks for all the comments.

I've worked with/trained with several SEALs and Army SF operators - some from the Vietnam era - and never once did you ever see them bragging about it.

i was in the navy for 6yrs as an AO (aviation ordnance) and have never heard of a rate like that, nor have i ever met an e4 who was a seal. and i got to host team 2 on my ship, in my mags. and was stuck with them for a month or so on cruise. they ambushed me one night while inspecting my mags during lights out. bastards. anyway, dudes full of ****. you don't let it be known that your a seal. wether your active duty or not. if you meet a real one, they are a blast to bar hop with. though their war stories tend to be a little better then yours.

To answer your question everyone is right, if he really was apart of a special unit he would never tell anyone, he would say "yeah i was in the navy" but never say exactly what he did. expecially not brag about being a seal like someone said they don't do that. as for rank adavncement usually for AF its to E-4 for all PJ, TACP, CCT. etc.

+1. I've known two combat controllers personally and they were well into their careers by the time they were a SrA. Back in Airman Leadership School in '97 they both had racks of ribbons on their blues to show for it (I remember counting 17 ribbons on one of them w/ clusters one day) and plenty of war stories to share. One of them is still around and I talk w/ him once in a while, but the other guy was KIA at the start of this war (4/8/03). I miss him.

Probably the best resource:

http://veriseal.org/

Others...
http://www.navyfrogmen.com/phony.html
http://www.nightscribe.com/Military/...nabe_seals.htm
http://www.specialoperations.com/Phonies/

A couple of simple questions. If the individual can't answer them, chance are they are a fake.

Ask for:
Class number
Swim Buddy
Commanding officer
Platoon Officer

Laws on the books for pretenders...

Title 18 United States Code:

Sec. 702. Uniform of the armed services and Public Health Service:
Whoever, in any place within the jurisdiction of the United States or in the Canal Zone, without
authority, wears the uniform, or a distinctive part thereof or anything similar to a distinctive part
of the uniform of any of the armed services of the United States, Public Health Service or any
auxiliary of such, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Sec. 704. Military Medals or Decorations:
(a) In General. - Whoever knowingly wears, manufactures, or sells any decoration or medal
authorized by Congress for the armed forces of the United States, or any of the service medals
or badges awarded to the members of such forces, or the ribbon, button, or rosette of any such
badge, decoration or medal, or any colorable imitation thereof, except when authorized under
regulations made pursuant to law, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than
six months, or both.

(b) Congressional Medal of Honor:
(1) In general. - If a decoration or medal involved in an offense under subsection (a) is a
Congressional Medal of Honor, in lieu of the punishment provided in that subsection,
the offender shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than one year, or both.
(2) Definitions. - (A) As used in subsection (a) with respect to a Congressional Medal of
Honor, "sells" includes trades, barters, or exchanges for anything of value.
(3) As used in this subsection, "Congressional Medal of Honor" means a medal awarded
under section 2741, 6241, or 8741 of Title 10."

Author's commentary (See Notice Below):
Regarding 18 U.S.C. Sec. 702 and 704(a):
18 U.S.C. Sec. 3559(a)(7) provides that an offense having a maximum assessable term of
confinement of more than 30 days and less than 6 months is a Class B misdemeanor.
18 U.S.C. Sec. 3571(b)(6) provides that the maximum fine for a Class B misdemeanor not
resulting in death is $5,000 per count on which the Defendant is convicted.
Regarding 18 U.S.C. Sec. 704(b):
18 U.S.C. Sec. 3559(a)(6) provides that an offense having a maximum assessable term of
confinement of more than six months and less than one year is a Class A misdemeanor.
18 U.S.C. Sec. 3571(b)(5) provides that the maximum fine for a Class A misdemeanor not

STS is a rate (Sonar Technician Subsurface)
0412 is a Naval Enlisted Classification (NEC) similar to Army MOS's.

The format you gave it in is this: STS-0412 BQQ-5/5 (V) Submarine Sonar Basic Maintenance Technician which is a standard C school for a Sonar Tech.

None of this is special forces related. The NEC for a SEAL operator is 5320 and you can be an E3. However STS is not a qualifying rate. He would have had to convert to an approved rating. So ask what rate he is/was. If he says STS then you will know.
