I've been deployed 13 times from Nov of 98 to Oct of 03. Been working staff positions since then.

However, so as to no falsely represent my deployments, all were 4-8 weeks. Being aircrew has it's perks.

Been on active duty Air Force for 7 and a half years, before that I was Air National Guard for 2 and a half years. The only deployment I've ever been on was when I was in the Guard. Went to PSAB for 2 and a half weeks. It was really more of just a vacation though!

Maybe I am being a dick but a deployment to me is over 180 days and involves a declared combat zone. Other locations are just taskings or a TDY you are sent on. Like I said maybe I am just stubborn on this one.

Just because we don't got on the "official" combat zone ground doesn't mean some of us aren't flying over it. And before the "yeah, you're a tanker" comes out, ask how many tankers have had random pot shots taken at them between OIF/OEF.

No to me a deployment is a BARE base and you build the bitch up from nothing out in the middle of now where. THAT's a real deployment...that and combat operations.

Now that is a little far but too each his own. Time away from family and creature comforts is what I am talking about and yes I have been there for initial base ops start up twice in my career. Burning **** is a blast..

I'm kind of with you on this. It's hard to say. Some see TDY as a deployment, some see a stop over in a hostile zone as a deployment.

I guess it's because I was Army and a deployment to us is in a hot zone for atleast 6 months. Some other ones like Somalia where shots where fired is a deployment for sure. Some would call that a tasking. Or a Quick trip.

OK. What does everyone consider a deployment and what branch of the military are you in?

Hahahaha..... I need to find this pic I have from OIF1 titled "When **** get's out of control". It shows how a group was burning like 12 ******** at once, and then the fire spread by wind to an old Iraq warehouse filled with tires. Nice fireworks to watch.

That's how the Army works. Each component has it's own terminology for a deployment. In the Air Force, if you get CEM orders, you are being deployed. Essentially what's being said here is that all these Air Force personnel on AEF rotations of 120 days aren't in a deployed status, which just isn't true. Aircrew (more specifically AMC aircrew) can't really deploy for 120 days because of currencies that have to be met that can't be met while deployed. That's the main reason for the large portion of AMC Aircrew only deploying for 60 days. But a deployment is a deployment, whatever the amount of time.

In my 8 years at Pope I've been shipped to the big sand box 3 times and twice to Gulfport Miss. for training.
