Hey guys, I'll be heading there in a few months and was wondering how often you can make morale calls back home. Is there a limit as to how often and how long the calls can be? Also, with the new wireless available, is it quick enough to use programs like Skype to do online video calls? Basically, just how cut off from family are you?

I'm here now...You can Make morale calls anytime you want. I know alot guys use skype on their laptops but the wireless has its limits. You cant use it in the dorms. I'm security Forces and I work nights so when I get off, the CAC is pretty dead so all the phones are open. invest in calling cards and bring LOTS of movies. and a portable DVD player

I never have a problem calling home... most people sit right outside the dorms or at least they have been since I've been here and talk via skype and what have you on their computers. Its 30 minutes a week but thats if you use the phone from the cac. I just call from work and call my command post and i talk for as long as i want to. The base is pretty cool. The food sucks.

So the wireless reaches the dorms? Sweet. I was thinking I'd have to sit in the cac anytime I wanted to talk to my wife. Are you limited to 30 minutes a week using your personal comp too? I figured it would be unlimited but slow due to everyone using the internet. Also, are web sites blocked on personal comps like on the gov comps? For online games and stuff. Thanks for the info guys.

I worked in the VSA when I was there, and inside the VSA and in Hammer (overwatch of gate 1) had DSN phones. I was on the phone for about 2-4 hours out of my shift talking to friends and family. Made time fly a lot quicker. Ask around about a morale phone number. It's like using a calling card, but free, without using a card. I forgot the number, but I'm sure if you ask a com person he could tell you.

But I know how you feel. Sometimes we would bring 15-30 at one time and the tiny room in the VSA would be so bad my eyes would almost water. and openning the door didnt even help.
