Nikon D90 vs Canon 50D
If you were starting over from scratch which way would you go...Nikon D90 or Canon 50D. I do not care about video's have an HD camera. I'm talking about picture quality, track, night shots, etc

I prefer Nikon over Canon personally. I feel their build quality, lens selection, and general feel of their cameras is better for what I use it for than Canon.
Why do you feel you need the D90 or 50D? What are you ultimately doing with the camera/shots taken? Do you have any old lenses you're going to use on either of these bodies?
Reason I ask is because most of the time, its not the camera itself thats going to make the big difference in picture quality, its the glass (lens) used. Your images will only be as good as the glass that was used to capture them. If you have old lenses of either brand, they will more than likely work with either of their respective brands. If you don't need the HD video, I'd strongly suggest looking at the Nikon D80 or D40x. Both are 10mp cams, and both take great shots, even with the 'kit' lenses, and can be had for $350-$800. I'd spend the money on one of these bodies and spend more money on a better lens (or 2) purchased separately.
If you want something that works well for quality, track, and low light, I'd invest in a body and buy your own lens to go along with it. The kit lenses for these cameras (unless you found a great deal somewhere) won't offer the wide aperture (at least a f2.8) you'll need for low light type shooting. Whichever brand you decide to go with for a body, there are same-brand lenses or 3rd party lenses (Tamron, Sigma, etc) that will work as well.
Theres several websites that review lenses and cameras, explaining each. If you're interested, feel free to PM me. I'm generally a 'rookie' to the dslr world/photography, but its kinda turned into a big interest for me and I find myself shooting more often/different ways with things as I learn more.

I just picked up the D60 a couple weeks ago on sale. Came with the kit lens and an extra 55-200mm VR zoom lens all for $699. It's a really nice camera for a very good price. I havn't seen the D40x around here though, so I can't vouch for that one.

It comes down to personal preference. They are both great cameras. The Canon is probably a little more user friendly and the Nikon probably has slightly better hi ISO performace. Both will take great pics.
I prefer the color recognition of Canon over Nikon and also Canon lenses. Their L line far surpasses the build quality of comparable Nikon lenses.

i'm tempted to pull the trigger and buy a d300 with an 18-200mm vr lens. I like the 51pt focus part on it, but its another 900 dollars over the d90 which is putting me inbetween the 2. I like the feel of the 40d/50d over the d90. D300 has a high quality feel also. d90 feels cheap compared to the canon

My opinion is biased because I'm brand loyal to Canon. Usually I hear that Nikons yield better hues and colors while Canons yield better image quality. That's one of the reason wedding photographers always use Nikons and sports photographers stick to Canons.

I ended up ordering a camera tonight I got tired of looking around etc. I ordered it because of the deal I got on the lens. I got the Canon Eos 50D 15.1 MP Digital SLR camera with the 28-135mm lens kit. I also got a Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Eos cameras. Camera should work great for the track.

The quality diff will be a huge.. My girl has a d40 and Im not gonna lie, it's a pretty good camera. I used my coworkers 50D for a shoot one time and I noticed a huge change in quality. They best thing you can do is go crazy with it and learn all the features. Personally I would choose a Canon over a Nikon from the same price range. Let me know how the 50D works out for you. I've found good deals on it online, so I might have to get one soon.
