I never understood why people don't just do setups like this:
Exactly!

That looks so much better!
Actually looks like it belongs on the car, not just some random piece they picked out at autozone.

So why do import owners like Supras/Evo's slant their mufflers like that? Is it for looks?

There are plenty of cars on this site making more power than that, flowing better, and have better looking exhausts (even dumped is better, or a catback style muffler like we use with tips, even C5/C6 style mufflers.)
My mistake. I was thinking you were referring to the size. As far as the look see below.

The 45 degree angle **** is like "YO DAWG I MAKE SO MUCH POWUH THAT I HAD TO HAVE THIS BIG OF A MUFFLER BUT IT DOESN'T FIT SO GOOD, OH WELL I FAST!"
I agree the exhaust for this G37 is way too extreme for his uses.

Also in reference to that pic with the exhaust on the black Supra You can tell that guy has a widebody kit as its hard to fit 4" or 5" exhausts with stock clearances.

I dunno I was able to tuck up a 3.5" exhaust on my fd rx-7 without making it look terrible

without the bumper, sucker was huge (got the car crashed and rebuilt it)
