Default ls2 cam in a ls1(lq4)

Ok I did search.. but not alot.

I know that the LS2 cam and LS1 cam have different cam sensor reluctor positions.

What would need to be done to install a LS2 cam into a LS1(LQ4) engine?

I figure I will need to relocate the sensor to the front of the engine since I can't put a reluctor wheel onto the cam. Reuse the timing set from the LS2.

Does the sensor go into the front engine cover? Would I have to replace that? or can the LS1 be modified? Is it really worth the effort.

I ask these questions because the goat is most likely to be treated to some mods soon. And I thought what the hell. I'll throw the heads, cam, and maybe a manifold and some headers on the truck. It's an '02 2500HD LQ4 6.0, and yes I still want to tow with it.

Don't waste your time on swapping an LS2 cam in your LQ4, instead get an LS6 cam. This will provide better low-end grunt for towing (versus bigger cams) yet be a step up from the LQ4 cam. Unlike the LS2 cam, which would gain you nothing, but headaches trying to make it work.

Thanks but aren't the LS2 and the LS6 cam specs identical.?

Besides the cam, oil pump, heads, and all other parts I would be replacing for the GTO(LS2) swap are free for the 2500, more or less. The only parts I can see that I would need are the front cover;$113, A harness adaptor; $39.95, and the sensor; $65. as well as gaskets.

I think it will work.
LQ4 cam:
I = L .467: D 196
E = L .479: D 219
LSA 116

LS2 cam:
I = L.525: D 204
E = L .525: D 211
LSA 116

And with the boost in compression I believe it should tow well.

I was referring to the LS6 cam being a direct bolt in, it would not need you to relocate the cam sensor. Also it is not price that is a concern, but getting the cam sensor to work on the Gen3 ECM. I am not sure it can be done without issues, nor have I heard anyone attempting that. But if you are set on it, go ahead, just be aware that your truck might not run until you sort out any issues with the cam sensor swap.
