Default question

Why do mechanics disconnect your battery when they work on your car?

Safety.. No risk of an electrical spark igniting something, and the airbags are disabled if they're working inside the vehicle.

So they don't fry any of the electrical components or short anything out.

Even if they disconnect the battery the bags can still go off. Unless they drain the power out of the airbag capacitors.

LOL! If they are good mechanics they should write all of the settings down.

But either way, just for electrical safety.

The capacitors only hold power for about 10 min. I usually just smoke a cig and wait a few minutes before I go back to work if I'm working inside the car.

Lock out-Tag out. Simple safety procedure. Where do you guys work?

Seriously, depending upon the area of the engine you are working on, you can short out things with a wrench, fry components, start the car while its up on jacks, run over yourself.... it does happen.

everyone has pretty much told you why they do this, but there is a little thing I have in my toolbox that plugs into the cigarette lighter that uses a 9volt battery. It keeps everything on the radio the same, without any risk of shorting anything out or the car starting and running you over.

Yet again if you touch the wrong circuts, that 9v is enough to set off the air bags.

That's good. Lock out/tag out refers to the safety procedure where everyone working on a piece of equipment places their own lock on the power panel. When something major is being done there may be many different locks on the panel, many different people working on the same equipment. And it cannot be recharged until each person has removed their lock or that person has been located for permission to remove the lock.

Keeps someone from starting the machine and getting you chewed up while you are inside still working on it.

That's the basic idea behind disconnecting the battery whenever you work on the engine. It might seem like it is not needed but it only takes once to get your hand caught in a belt or something worse. Plus, if you are doing something like engine work for a job, your employer will likely insist on it.
